I remember a while ago, I read somewhere that covenant weapons don’t have an obvious trigger. Every instance I’ve seen, that holds true. Anybody able to clear up just how these plasma-based weapons work?

I think it’s just pressure. You squeeze the handle and it fires, which is why they shoot wildly when the die… their hands clamping down in a final spasm as they fall.
Wouldn’t it be cool if it used synaptic sensors? When you imagine the gun firing, it fires. It would also hold up your point. Synapses firing off randomly in the instant of death. It’d be interesting to see a side-by-side slo-mo of a spartan firing a UNSC weapon and a Sangheli weapon. See if there are any glaring differences in how your character triggers the weapon.

Would result in unnecessary casulties,as you just need to think something wrong and the weapon would fire.

Is that the canon explanation? Christ, that’s sounds terribly insane and unsafe.

You’re talking about the Covenant.
The ones who were going to kill everyone in the galaxy, strapped bombs to the Grunts and forced unmutual Drones into slavery.
They said no obvious trigger. Not no trigger. Considering the myriad of Covenant races that have to use the thing, it’s possible it fires using configurable sensors which can adapt to the natural trigger reflex of the various species that use them.
More likely, however, in at least the case of the Plasma Rifle and Plasma Pistol, there are a variety of configurations of lowered and raised panels on the grips, presumably designed to be accessible to the various appendages of the different Covenant species. I can imagine that these trigger the firing mechanism of the weapon - I suggest examining closeups of the weapons on Halopedia or something and see for yourself.

You have a point. By the way, I figured out where I read that in. It was mentioned in Halsey’s journal included in the Halo: Reach Limited Edition box. Interesting to note that these weapons will explode into deadly shrapnel if you damage the core enough, just like everything else that is powered by or fueled with plasma. Imagine if you could take advantage of that in the game.
I think in the covenants boots. They have buttons under their toes they press down on. And that’s how the guns fire!

Then there’s the problem that the weapon could fire with every step, and there should be no way that you would be able to use it effectively.

If you take a close look at the handle of the Plasma Rifle (especially in Halo 2) you can see a sort of discoloration in the center where the fingers are, and the Halo 3 one has a raised section in the middle of the hand-grip.
I think that’s probably the trigger.
When Halsey said “no obvious trigger”, I think she meant no equivilent to the massive metal spike humans use to fire their weapons.
