So can anyone give me a summary of what happened with the covenant since the end of Halo 3 until Halo 5. I’m not sure I understand it completely.
After the Great Schism and Truth’s defeat at the Ark, the Covenant disbanded back into its separate species. But some ideals and alliances persisted, reforming factions and groups that would fight amongst themselves and continue to harrass the UNSC.
The Elites broke into factions on their homeworld, with the old Kaidans fighting for control and authority. The Arbiter united several keeps into the Swords of Sanghelios, which is now a dominant Elite faction.
The most significant faction hostile to humanity is a group formed under Jul 'Mdama, known as the Covenant, as it is an attempt at reforming the broken alliance. Jul took Elites from many worlds, and started taking other species too, under a religious goal of finding the Didact and Forerunner secrets to destroy their enemies. Jul actually isn’t religious, but he’s exploiting his followers to secure Sangheili dominance after ONI killed his wife and imprisoned him. This is the group we fight in Halo 4 and 5.
In Halo 5, the Covenant is beginning to break, and Jul is possibly dead. The Swords of Sanghelios push them back to their final strongholds, prepared to finish them off.
The covenant essentially disbanded. The Elites went back to Sanghelios to figure out what they would do post war. After disagreements between arbiter supporters (ally with humanity) and naysayers, civil war broke out and Jul mdama was captured by kilo five. Jul was sent to trevelyan (onyx) and later escaped to another covenant planet (dont remember the name, but they didnt know the war was over). Pretending to be sent by the forerunners and created the covenant we see in H4. Jul found where to find the Didact, and sat outside Requiem for a few years. The events of H4 happen, and we know that arbiters swords of sanghelios are winning the war against Juls covenant. Other than that, there isn’t much happening.

Thanks! That really clears everything up.
Stuff happens, Prophets go by by, the Covenant splinters, people die.
Shortest explanation possible.

meanwhile;
the prophets have gone into super hiding.
the brutes are doing what they do best, killing each other into the stone age to decide who’s boss (or at least I assume that’s what’s happening as I don’t recall them being mentioned post H3)
in the outer colonies some small groups of jackals have been integrated into human colonies as ‘merchants’ (dirty space pirates more like) other jackals are working for the highest bidder.
bugs bugged out
grunts work for whoever isn’t trying to kill them and/or are just trying to stay out of it.
