From what I can gather from google, Covenant have no exploration ships. So if the covenant decided to refit a ship to solo long range exploration, say for finding allies on the other side of human territory, which ship do you think would be best and why?
Would a CAS or CSO be good if they removed the excivation beam for refinery, manufacturing, and repair stations? Maybe on the CSO even adding extra fuel storage/refining stations dedicated to fuel. Also onboard food sources, such as farms or hydroponic facilities?
I think they have sensor probes. I remember reading that thousands of little drones are surrounding high charity at all times and they can detect anything larger than a centimeter and tag it for a cruiser to destroy. So it’s safe to assume that if a fleet wanted to chart a nebula or something they probably can launch similar probes to map it for them

They did use missionary ships to explore - such as Minor Transgression which discovered Harvest: https://www.halopedia.org/Missionary_shipWe know that CAS were used for operations behind enemy lines and could operate in such circumstances for extended periods (Shadow of Intent novel).
That said: such a huge ship would be best in the centre of a large fleet, not exploration duties.
I’m not sure the Covenant would have been interested in finding allies per say: at best they could have found resources for forward operating bases.

Didnt know about that, good to know though, thanks!

The allies was a bad example, I guess more forerunner structures on the other side of human space would be a better example.

In which case definitely the missionary ships. Expendable Kig Yar privateers basically. Covenant don’t need to worry about their supply situation too much and keep their combat vessels available

You think the covenant would task something like finding holy forerunner facilities to Kig Yar? Seems like something they wouldnt trust any race below the Sangheili to do.

Yes I do because Contact Harvest makes it clear that canonically they do - even before the war.
The advantage of using Kig yar scavengers is the divide and conquer approach: keep the scavengers at each others’ throats so that they’ll report each other and keep the rewards for finds generous.

They did that all the time. The first time humanity encountered the Covenant involved a Kig Yar missionary vessel that happened upon a freighter coming from Harvest. technically, the first shots exchanged in the Covenant War were between Sergeant Johnson and a group of Kig Yar.

Unless we count throwing of rocks because in that case the first belligerent was a Huragok…

I would argue that the first belligerent was actually Henry Gibson and his fire extinguisher.

An interesting question though: he was responding to an intruder without deadly force. Does that make him a belligerent
I suppose it does
