They can drive ghosts.
> (Honestly though I can’t say I WANT them to know how to drive, considering CE’s AI is much worse than Reach’s and Reach’s is still terrible)
I think it’s something of a toss-up. In Halo 1, marines driving vehicles actually more or less do something, though they’re prone to splattering you. On the other hand, Reach drivers may be much less likely to splatter you, but they don’t really accomplish much of anything, and if they decide to drive your vehicle, it’s bail or die.
The marines were better drivers in CE than they were in Reach for some reason. Reach was the first game in the series where I was actually afraid to hop in the gunner seat and let them drive.

Indeed. Though if you should ever see one or two of them hop into a ghost, run for your freaking life. As infrequent as they are when it comes to getting in ghosts, they’ve probably run me over more times than the covenant have. They don’t pilot any other vehicle at all in CE. A little disappointing, but considering how deadly to your life they are with ghosts (or at least my own if I’m just really unlucky) and how… Well they drive in future Halo’s, perhaps it’s a good thing they don’t.
The only vehicle they drive is the Ghost (usually happens when you get in a vehicles and all the seats are taken, so they’ll get in a Ghost and follow you).
Man I really do hope the AI can drive, cuz I miss gunning them down without worrying about them crashing to a wall or stopping every few seconds… haha Halo Reach was the problem for that lol
They can only drive Ghosts but they could operate any vehicle if they were the right seats.
The most important thing is what makes them run for the Ghosts: enemy threat
So get at least 10 of the Ghosts found on AotCR, drive them to a enemy hotspot, and then go back and get your marines and you should have a Ghost army.

Kat was a bad driver she drove me off the edge and there was no enemies in the entire area to blame for it. She just turned left suddenly and we fell off a ravine.
Either a lot of people have a bad memory or they never played CE to begin with. CE Marines couldn’t drive you around in the Warthog. In Halo 2 it was a new feature that you could gun while a marine drove.
