Hey, I’m looking to improve my skills in this game. I’ve been playing Halo 5 and I keep doing somewhat badly (in my eyes, at least) and I dont know how to improve. Ironically, at the same time, I’ve been getting better at Halo 1-3 exponentially (again, in my eyes).
Are there any tactics you guys personally use? I know in the end it all comes down to practice and that theres no one way to get good, but pointers would be nice.
Thanks in advance.
Okay. Here is my list. I used to be a GOD at Halo: Reach, slacked off and my KD dropped, xP. IL give you some pointers from my reach days.
-
Don’t use smartlink upclose, 100% of the weapons have it and 40% of them had a scope in previous titles. Just don’t use. I also feel that it decreases bullet magnetism.
-
Strafe (Means go side to side while keeping your redicule at head/body level) use your spartans movement to aim rather than using your actual “aiming” button.
-
Don’t get mad, it clouds your judgement, abilities.
-
Keep playing, I have 11k games and too many kills/death’s in reach, you naturally get skill the more you play. The human brain is pretty good at adapting to new environments, both physical and virtual. You will gain given skill.
-
Don’t throw frag/plasma grenades while shooting at somebody from close range (unless you can stick them, of course) throwing them and missing them = certain death because you lose all that extra damage.
-
Throw random grenades, hail mary.
-
Yeah, idk this is it
We can play together sometime if you want. I haven’t really gotten into to Halo 5 yet so you can watch me fail too!
Even though I’m not probably much (or at all) better than you, I’ve found that I do best in matches where I utilise all spartan abilities (sometimes, even if you can’t get the kill, groundpound can be useful - pop their shields, then headshot them a few times). And the best general thing to bettering arena gameplay, is get real used to the magnum. That thing is your friend, and in direct contrast to my last statement, dont be too trigger happy with spartan charging. It should only be used in some situations, and also, try to stay clear of 2 or 3 vs 1’s when you are unclear of the enemies locations, health or weapons. It is awkward to get rocket launched around a corner. Also, particularly in warzone, get used to different kinds of weapons and vehicles - the random weapon cards are great, if you can properly use all the weapons.
Also, remember that one headshot, is almost always better than 1.3 body shots. IE, make like it is swat, and aim for the head, but at the same time, don’t saccrifice too much time doing so. In a firefight, time is your greatest ally if used to your advantage, and adversary if not.
Finally, if you want to do better in arena (in terms of team scores), I recommend getting a group of friends (or even one) and skyping or voice chatting while playing, a 2v2 is better than a 2v1.

Haha! I cant wait, I tend to rage pretty hard sometimes, and I say some interesting things so I offer free entertainment as well. But yeah, I find myself to have been a lot better at 3 and Reach simply because I was so used to the aim assist there, the magnetism in H5 just feels wonky to me.
…i don’t have any useful tips for you since i could use some advice myself, so i’m just gonna BUMP and follow the topic
First thing that usually helps me the most is get a feel for the maps, know where the enemy team are and where most people like to go.
Try to stay on the outskirts of maps
Personally I don’t like running round with my team, probably because I play solo, that way I can sneak up on enemies when they don’t expect it
You match up against people of your own rank/ skill. So its automaticly harder than halo 4 or reach.
Stick to your team.
Since this game has really bad spawns… try not to die in the beginning. Ones you die… its very hard to survive your way to your team.
not enough people use the terrain correctly , stick to cover, also know when to bug out and not keep running into the same death trap…im looking at you warzone peps that spawn run to front door get killed and repeat.
Practice the maps in custom games.
Practice lopping nades into camping/sniper spots.
Learn map sightlines and weapon/equipment spawn times.
Find and practice trick jumps on the maps. The are many little known & unknown jumps to reach high ground or traverse the map quickly. Example: Regret has a jump i found to get from where the carbine spawns up to the boltshot spawn and to the top mid in around 3 seconds. It’s not hard and can be done every time. There are heaps more that I will keep secret.
Don’t underestimate promethean nades. They are my personal favourite. Quicker kill times and more forgiving placement than other nades and great for flushing out people, blocking someone’s path and asset denial.
Bumper jumper helps heaps with mobility over other layouts.
Learn to use all power weapons on the map and make sure somebody on your team gets em every time. There are a lot of players that will not pickup power weapons only for the enemy to grab em and kill your whole team.Don’t let the other team get a powerup and go on a rampage. Grab em and protect your team members that are rocking power equipment. Defend the spawn locations .If the enemy is going for a power item beat them to it. If you don’t think you’ll survive grab the powerup or weapon anyway. That way at least if you die the enemy can’t use it to go on a killing spree.
Hope it helps.
Oh yeah. And throw all 6 nades before you die.
