Is it possible for the Backwards Compatibility team at Microsoft to create a patch for Reach so that the game runs at 60fps like the MCC and Halo 5??? I know it’s fully fixed and runs better than it does on 360, but 60fps would be awesome.
It’d be the next best thing to a full remaster!!!
If It’s impossible and you think I’m stupid for wondering, please be nice.
In theory yes, they could potentially make the game run better with backwards compatibility however, it depends on a lot of factors on how Reach was originally designed. For example:
Animations are 30fps. The games animations may not look right at 60fps. A good example is Halo CE (PC) and Halo 5 (Xbox) when the game is running at 60fps but the animations do not. In Halo 5, this happens when an enemy is further away from you and is a really jarring experience, breaking the immersion.
Game time. Are the physics tied to the framerate? In some games, increasing the framerate also increases the speed the game is played out. For example, Killer Instinct on Windows 10 had an issue where if you tried to play on a 144hz monitor with more than 60fps, the whole game would play faster e.g. If your PC could run the game at 120fps, the game speed would be twice as fast and the timer would tick down twice as fast.
Unfair advantage. 60fps would be amazing and i think is ideal for most game genres but as Reach is still very much a 360 game, to be given an unfair advantage in multiplayer by having 60fps could destroy the experience for some users. 60fps increases the response time for the game, controls and feels much more fluid in action vs 30fps, giving players an edge in combat.
Personally, I would rather see a small resolution increase to full 720p. Not enough of an increase to give an advantage in multiplayer but will make the game look a little bit sharper.
The dolphin emulator that plays Wii and Gamecube games on PC plays those games at 1080p. So it is possible to get better results out of an emulator. Even Red Dead plays better on Xbone than it does on 360. The issue is that you usually need a much stronger PC than the Wii hardware to get those results. And Red Dead is just more stable, not twice the frame rate. With COD 2 the story is the same, the game runs at a much higher fps on XBone but the original game was built for 60fps, it just couldn’t maintain the frame rate on 360. Halo Reach would have been designed around 30fps, maybe even capped. And look at all the problems they’ve had just getting it to 360 standard.
So I think it’s safe to say that on the Xbox One, it is not possible to get Halo Reach to play better on Xbox One without an actual HD port.
