Could Master Chief find a way to save Cortana?

With Halo Infinite coming out next year, what are the chances of the Master Chief finding a way to save Cortana? And, could we see a redemption from Cortana as well?

I’m not saying it’s impossible to save Cortana, because ultimately, the problem here is Rampancy. She’s gotten to the ‘God Complex’ point where she just dictates that she is better than mankind. The only reason she doesn’t display this towards John is because a part of her still cares for him. It was her job to protect him, after all. So towards John and Blue Team, they get treated with care, only because she cares so deeply for Master Chief.

She was brought back from Rampancy once (she just doesn’t remember this detail because saving her meant wiping her memory banks clear of most of her knowledge intake) so she could be saved again. However the circumstances might be different. The first time, she was just an AI, now she’s an advanced Ancilla who has touched the Domain. It might be harder.

If the Master Chief is able to save her, she could redeem herself, but I think that would only enrage the community. They’re already pretty upset that her death was ‘ruined’ even though given the power of the Forerunners, we couldn’t be guaranteed that she was indeed gone in 4 in the first place. But I guess I can see why everyone thought she was, I even thought she was gone too, I won’t deny it, but I wasn’t mad when she turned out to still be alive. Though her part in Halo 5’s plot seems…poorly written.

I really hope not. The significance of her death in H4 was utterly destroyed by her return in H5. I’m hoping Cortana isn’t alive at all and either the Didact or the Gravemind is using her visage to trick the Created into weakening the galaxy for their return. For the Didact, it would serve to pave the way for the Forerunners to resume control of the Mantle (or just the Didact and his Prometheans). For the Gravemind, it would serve to divide the galaxy into bite size pieces for the Flood to consume at their leisure.

she should have not returned. it was kind of frustrating to see

The Cortana character has been handled in an extremely bizarre and inconsistent way through the 343 years. Trying to come up with another heel turn twist or giving her another noble sacrifice won’t feel like covering new and interesting ground, and also won’t feel believable on account of the fact that we’ve seen her do both of these things before.

I think the only hope for the 343i games and the classic games to ever really feel concordant is if Halo Infinite does something to explain or justify Cortana’s whole scattered arc through this trilogy so far. I see that resulting in a tragic demise. Not to mention that she’s by far the most interesting opponent for John to have to go up against and ultimately, to his sorrow, defeat.

Weaseling away from that conflict and resolution feels like the very wrong move to me.

Personally I don’t understand why some people are so “upset”, “mad” or even “frustrated” with Cortana’s return in Halo 5. I was actually sad that they killed her off in Halo 4 when clearly there was Halo 5 and 6 still pending. She is a MAJOR character in the game, without whom Halo loses it’s charm. The chemistry between Cortana and the Master Chief is one of the main reasons what made Halo what it is today, atleast for me (not mentioning the awesome Halo universe and story). The fact that there is a game called Halo Reach where a major plot point is the Noble team sacrifices their lives to save Cortana. She is of great significance. And c’mon don’t tell me for a second that no-one’s seen characters being brought back from the dead before, sometimes with very stupid reasons.

I think 343 handled it quite nicely with the plot twist. In Halo 5 in the Argent Moon mission, I was like wait is she a vision? Then questions came up like is she the real Cortana or a rampant fragment? is she the Didact in disguise? is she doing what she’s doing because of the logic plague given to her by the Gravemind (because I really don’t think the cutscene in Halo 2 Anniversary with the Gravemind and Cortana was made just for kicks!) If she has the logic plague, was Halo 5 a setup for the Flood’s return? If so the HELL YEAH WELL DONE 343! The fact that the return of Cortana keeps us guessing means it’s not just a dumb plot point.

If people should be “mad” it can be because 343 could have handled the storyline better in Halo 5. The recent easter eggs for Halo Infinite by 343 shows that the Cortana plot is more complex than it seems.

Please 343 somehow put the Master Chief and Cortana fight together on one side once again like Halo 1, 2 and 3! I’m so pumped for Halo infinite!

I just finished another Halo 5 run and I think she is too far gone at this point. With her having all of the power she does now and having the “cure” for rampancy… i think she will have to be destroyed completely.

Halsey did say to Locke that cortana was created from her consciousness (or something along those lines - don’t grill me for misquoting lol) so maybe she can recreate her? maybe a version 2.0 or something? i do think this needs to be the death of cortana though.

The main reason, at least for me, is that her death in Halo 4 worked in a narrative context. A character, who knows she’s about to die anyway, pulls one last heroic act to help the hero defeat the bad guy. Not a very original story, but it works. Her final scene, while sort of hokey, does allow her to give both the Chief and the player some closure.

In Halo 5, she’s somehow still alive which kind of renders the whole thing pointless. And that’s really just the rotten cherry on top of the giant pile of dog crap that was Halo 5.

Well I guess that’s realism for ya lol! At the time when Cortana thought she was dying to save Master Chief in Halo 4, she actually thought she was dying. Hell I guess even 343 at that time thought she was dying! So all the closure had its point at that time. We lived with that for 3 years. Then somehow she found the domain and didn’t die. This information was for the next game. Though pointless it does make some sort of sense. It’s called a plot twist. How good/bad it is is upto the players.

It’s like if my wife dies and she says she loves me and she will always be with me and we have our closure. I cry my -Yoink!- off. Before burying her she comes back to life. Will I go like why did you come back? You died once already and I had my closure now go back to where you came from. Yes I know it depends on the wife if you’d want her back or not lol but you get my point.

I think using this route helped connect a lot of scenarios from Halo 1, 2 and 3 with Halo 4, 5 and 6. Like cause and effect. Keyes saying that Cortana falling into the wrong hands would be catastrophic, the Gravemind’s torture of Cortana, the return of the Flood, etc. I’m pretty sure the nostalgia of “Don’t make a girl a promise” and “I always keep my promise” will come to Halo 6 in some form. And nostalgia sells!

I’m sorry but I love Halo with all my heart and it is what it is. I can’t even imagine the people at 343. They eat and sleep Halo everyday so I’m pretty sure they have the bigger picture in mind and how they want everything to come together as a whole. What’s gone is gone and I’m looking forward to Halo 6 and we have to live with whatever 343 chooses to do with that. Just trying to keep the glass half full.

Btw not trying to diss your points man. Just making conversation

At the end of e3 trailer you even see him pull out the chip to store her back into his helmet… since its 343 it will also be the case here. only bungie would be crazy enough to destroy the entirety of a planet :stuck_out_tongue:

Really hope so. Although the secret recording found by decrypting the E3 trailer shows that there is another Cortana. Also the serial number on the chip is of the next version of Cortana. So Halsey gives a fresh Cortana version to Chief to fight the real one? The new version can merge with the real one and “fix” her? 343 messes with us more by giving the alternate version of the audio of the ending of Discover Hope trailer. The actual trailer implies that the real Cortana somehow gets back to the chip (btw well done 343 … that music! that voice! just perfect!) but the alternate recording shows the existence of 2 Cortanas. I’m really hoping for the former! Cheers!
