Could a Spartan II or III now become an ODST?

Being things as they are now in the Halo universe, kinda made me wonder about how Spartans are now. We know Gen IV Spartans are adults and can more than likely take leave and retire, or maybe even switch units after a contract is up (assuming the enlistment process is like how it is today). What of the Spartan II’s and III’s though? Especially the II’s who are practically enslaved to their work, who definitely can’t function within society on just a psychological level. So do they have those kinds of freedoms? Could they say move to become an ODST or even retire?

There’s actually two (at least) occurances of Spartan II’s retiring and having families.

I don’t see why one would join the ODST’s though.

Idk could just be preference, but I’m more just curious on how much freedom they have. But I didn’t know any had retired or even had families, thought the augments would’ve made them sterile or too strong on a normal person to keep it PG.

The Spartan IIIs were expendable and not a lot survived. Like someone said before a couple of Spartan IIs have retired but most that survived are still active. With the augmentations its very hard for them to fit into normal society. That and the huge amount of mental stress they endured while serving makes them not suitable for normal society as well.

Why would they? That is like going from being in the SAS to being a regular marine.

The Spartans were already known to drop with ODSTs on plenty of occasion, I doubt there’d be any need to formally transfer into the force. If Blue Team is representative of older Spartan teams as a whole, it seems like IIs and IIIs probably get a small bit of autonomy in choosing their missions. I’d wager one of them could get themselves frequently or even primarily assigned to orbital drop missions, if they really wanted that.

didn’t they say Buck went from a ODST to a Spartan and then back to ODST with his original squad?

To me being a Spartan then going to ODST is a step backwards. Plus why would you give up armor.

All of Alpha-9 (the ODST squad) became Spartan-IVs. After the events of Halo 5, Buck returned to Alpha-9 from Osiris.

I would imagine they could request the transfer, but should expect it to be denied.

We’ve seen ODSTs becoming Spartans but not really the reverse.

ODSTs have become Spartans, but there’s no point in a Spartan being an ODST- as shown in various media, Spartans have used the SOIEV’s before- and that’s the whole bit of being an ODST. Use the SOIEV and be a shock force that can deploy behind and around the enemy. It would be a little redundant to go back a step.

What benefits or reasoning would someone have to do that? The IIs and IIIs are a close knit group who grew to rely on each other and look upon their numbers as family. Is it a cross branch relations initiative? I see that as one of the few reasons for this scenario only the Spartan might just be detached to that ODST unit similar to Naomi being teamed with three ODSTs in the Kilo-Five series. Speaking bluntly, just about anything an ODST performs a Spartan can do better.

Good point. It’s no secret that some Spartans do have specified or preferred roles during ops too, like for example Linda who fancies the Sniper. With Mjolnir armor being the way it is, i’m sure a Spartan’s most preferred missions or the ones they get assigned to most would reflect their armor types too. Things like EOD, Hazop, ODST (Mjolnir version), Military Police and Recon/Scout come to mind.

I don’t get why they would either surely after being Spartan II’s and serving the last thing they’d want is to go to ODSTs right?
