Cosmetic Toggle: Electric Boogaloo

So, figured we’d start off the new year with the forum’s favourite topic! Cosmetic toggles. Again, I’ll start by explaining why a toggle would be a positive addition to Halo Infinite and then how I’d create the toggle and what it’s basis would be.

Why create a Cosmetic Toggle:

Halo in the prime of the franchise’s online existence Halo 2 - Reach has always had a visual integrity. Halo 3 & Reach both had very rare silly cosmetic items. But as Halo now gives an even greater range of silly or non-canon cosmetics (cat ears, mythic effects, kill effects, reindeer antlers) so too should the option to avoid them be available to those who’d appreciate it.

Halo has always been a game where out of place cosmetics have been only a fraction of the games visual experience instead of something unavoidable.

From seasonal events, fractures and items crafted to be loud, obnoxious to tempt you to open your wallet - Infinite is plagued by trend chasing cosmetic designs. Following the footsteps of Siege (A game ruined for many by its outrageous designs) and COD. Something it never needed to do, but it has.

Halo should never follow trends, we know this by now. Those in control of Halo before Infinites launch simply didn’t care about the world’s integrity as made obvious by how the franchise had been treated up until recently. (H4 & 5s artistic choices, TV series, ect). Not with reverence and respect.

But with new leadership, I hope that can change. And those that love Halo for its world and art as much as it’s gameplay can have what they deserve. A simple, cosmetic Toggle that disables all non-canon cosmetics from the POV of the user.

This would not only, show that 343 cares about your experience as much as lining their own pockets - it would also allow for more acceptance of outrageous cosmetics becoming part of Halo Infinites cosmetic suite. As they undoubtedly will as Infinites lifespan continues.

It would also allow for players to opt out of seasonal designs. Christmas hats, ect.

These aren’t things players should be forced to look at. And it takes NOTHING away from those who purchase or earn them for an unknown other to not see a tiny segment of their cosmetic choices.

An optional cosmetic toggle that unbiasedly censors non-canon cosmetics would only make for a better experience for those who’d chose to use it and has no real effect on anyone else.

Those choosing to keep the toggle disabled would have no way of knowing. And, ignorance is bliss.

The best reason of all to make the toggle reality is that, it’ll please people. And won’t really upset anyone either. It’s just a win for 343.

How to design a cosmetic toggle & what it should include:

A cosmetic toggle should not work on the basis of what a loud minority dislikes in particular, for example disabling only cat ears but not the Santa hat. Or disabling one fracture and not the other. No, rather it should work based off of 343s own categorisation methods through manufacturer listings that they have purposefully put on EVERY cosmetic.

Manufacturers such as FOTUS, 343 Industries & Fractures are obvious non-canon manufacturers.

FOTUS can be found as manufacturer of almost every effect type and all silly cosmetics. (Flower power, purrfect audio, perfect circle, judgement helm)

343 Industries can be found as manufacturer for HCS cosmetics.

Fractures for Fracture content of all kinds.

These three manufacturers are obvious ways 343 has categorised what is and isn’t in the actual Halo universe. So, I think a cosmetic toggle should simply disabled any and all types of cosmetic labeled under either 343 or FOTUS and all the Fracture manufacturers.

This would disable all types of effects from view, fracture cores and other non-canon cosmetics. However I do believe an exception can be made for any and all coatings and visors from Fractures that 343 has purposefully made cross-core compatible. As this, unlike the actual fracture armours themselves have purposefully been made cross-core.

Aside from that, everything else should be covered by this censor. That way, those who love it can, and those that don’t - don’t have to see or think about it.

CONCLUSION:

Everybody wins.

I see it’s that time again for you to create yet another topic on this.

This one in particular stands out though for very good reason too:

Look over it carefully, it’s very important.
