Cortana's Words

In the campaign trailer that we saw today Cortana’s words echo in the background.

“I need you to to understand. There’s not much time.”

“If you knew how you were going to die, how would you live your life differently?”

I’m wondering what these quotes are referring to. The context is either Cortana justifying her actions in Halo 5 or a flashback to something she may have said during the events of Halo 4, maybe off screen (not familiar enough with the game’s dialogue to know that offhand).

Assuming that it’s the former, it sounds like it could be a warning. But what of? The Banished? The Flood? The Didact, Warden Eternal, or some other Forerunner entity? Something else entirely. Let me know what you think.

I think there are a lot of possibilities here. Spoilers for the book shadows of reach here -

It’s possible that as a spiritual reboot and an effort to move in a new direction, this story will reframe parts of the previous narrative from Halo 4 and 5. We know from Shadows of Reach and now confirmed by this trailer that this game features a new AI that was likely built from the same source material as Cortana. From the end of Halo 5, the audio log, and the new details from “The Weapon,” we know that Chief was onboard the Infinity and tasked with delivering Cortana to the Infinity for deletion. Clearly that didn’t go well, maybe because of the Banished, maybe a struggle with Cortana. The Weapon claims that Cortana has been deleted, and Chief either can’t remember what happened, or didn’t witness it. It’s possible that Cortana was warning chief about The Weapon, maybe it’s an ONI plot or something else entirely. That said, The Weapon mentions expecting to have been deleted, and Chief seems to trust her because “something stopped your deletion, we need to find out why.” Did Cortana stop this deletion? Could she live on through this new AI, or somehow leave clues or a trail for them to follow? I assumed that when she asked “if you knew how you were going to die, how would you live your life differently?” she was either referring to her own descent into rampancy during Halo 3, or referring to being deleted by the UNSC. I’m really wondering about “I need you to understand, there much time.” Maybe at some point in Infinite we will reconnect with Cortana and have a new explanation for her actions in Halo 5. There are quite a few ways it could go that I think could work out. I think it is unlikely to be the Warden Eternal or the Didact, the Flood would be a pretty exciting possibility, but I’m also curious about the possibility of it being related to some sort of ONI secret. Would be much more interested in ONI, Flood, or Mendicant Bias origins than the Warden Eternal/return of Promethean combat.

it means that we’ll send Cortana back in time to stop the war lol

It’s entirely possible Cortana may have been speaking to The Weapon as well
