In Reach, Cortana is transported in a big, heavy capsule. However, John is able to carry her around on a data chip. What is the reasoning behind the giant capsule vs. the data chip?
On a related note, why did Captain Keyes have to go through all sorts of button pushing to yank her out of the system?
The answer to your first query is because Noble Six’s Mark V MJOLNIR was not compatible with the insertion of a data crystal chip like John’s Mark V and later his and all other variations of the Mark VI. This is because Six’s armor was one of the first iterations of the Mark V generation and did not support the function to house a Smart AI, whereas John’s suit was the final baseline iteration and first Mark V model to support the insertion and storage of a data crystal chip that could house a Smart AI like Cortana.
The answer to your second query is that Keyes had to upload Cortana’s core array to the data crystal chip itself with his own permission as Captain of the UNSC Pillar of Autumn, since she was vital to the ship’s operational capabilities. Or at least that is the most sensible and logical answer I can provide. There isn’t any explanation as to why he had to go through 3 seconds worth of trouble to pull her out.
I hope this helps!
Sincerely,

I never thought about like that but it makes perfect sense.

That does make sense, thanks. But, why was Six not given a chip to carry instead? Seems like it would be a lot easier to haul around.

I hear Noble Six loves a challenge. He’s still trying to live off the wild in Reach with his wits being his only companion.
So we could physically see that the player was carrying the item. Give the player a greater sense of what they’re trying to accomplish and imply it could be smashed by making it more physically visible. Even though it can’t happen you are still left thinking that subconsciously.
isn’t there a chip INSIDE the container? That’s what it looks like.
