so i have been kinda hard on this topic. with what cortana have done to the living in halo 5, i don’t think unsc would simply accept her surrender or accept her back in the hands of the unsc. cortana is ,one way or another, gonna die infinite thats for sure i guess. but the thing is ,if they (343i) decides to kill her off in infinite , bringing her back in any sequel game will be kinda meh. but on the other hand, i dont think they should continue and end chief’s story without cortana’s on her side. but again, letting her live, forigven and being handed back to usnc/chief would be just unacceptable by the livings. so how do you think the cortana should be handled and what her fate should be. if you ask me, if cortana is gonna die for once and all, kill chief too.
Not to sound morbid, but I hope she dies—and for good this time. Regardless of how some feel about Halo 4, her character arc in that game is fantastic and should never have been (sorta) retconned in Halo 5. Even still, 343 has the potential to redeem her status as a villain by giving her a unique place in Halo Infinite’s story. I just hope they do it right.

Am not saying that she shouldn’t die. What am saying is that keep her relevant in the story. She must die for good this time for what she has done . But I don’t think future halo games will have the same fire like hce-h4 did. 343 should try to bring her back ,one way or another ,if they kill her off in infinite. Or just kill chief with cortana too and this saga.
I think it should have ended with H4. While it was sad to see her go, I did not like the way they brought her back in H5. But that is what we’re stuck with, and I think the UNSC won’t take kindly on what she did in H5. Remember back in H4 when Del Rio wanted to dismantle her just because of a little moment of rampancy? Yeah right.

Bungie already killed off Sgt. Johnson, one of Halo’s best characters, in Halo 3, and the series lost a little something ever since. I don’t think we should be getting rid of any more of the old characters. Then again…with what 343 have done to Cortana in Halo 5, I can barely link her back to the old games…

I disagree completely, 343i should not bring her back one way or another if they kill her off in Infinite and Master Chief does not need to die along side her. If they don’t know how to end his story then let him flow away in space (again) until he is needed again. I am ready for Halo to end after Infinite but having it so that the last tre Chief related games contain Chief losing a close friend, getting her back but evil and wanting to rule the galaxy and the third him dying is just poor writing and should be considered a crime against creating a finale for a long and loved game series.
Deletion, permanently no more lost pieces of her to scurry away into obscurity and come back again, or fragmented imprisonment like Mendicant Bias. One way or the other John sees her for the last time.

i agree completely. cortana cant be brought back after if she is killed in infinite but the thing, if this is cortana’s last chapter, the further sequels will fell empty, somethings missing. i dont think chief can ,emotionally, continue his fight after killing cortana by his own hand . he would be too weak.chief isnt machine after all. am saying this from a narrative perspective. Let chief die. end his heroic legend. with cortana by his side (or not) .

Master Chief has lost people closer to him (like Samuel which was like a brother he had grown up with and he lost him when he was younger and more “vulnarable”) so he’s lost people before and managed to keep the fight going and he has lost her before but this time may be different because he has to kill her but I think that won’t be more emotional for Chief considering that he knows that she is not Cortana anymore. But I see your point, from a gameplay perspective if the games would keep coming with Master Chief in them but not Cortana, something would feel like it’s missing considering we have had Cortana with us from the beginning.
From a narrative perspective, yes this is the perfect time to end Chief story but in my personal opinion it only would fit the narrative if the last two game wouldn’t have been so random and the story so wrongfully put. Cortana doing a heroic sacrifice in the first game out of a trilogy and the second game not only neglecting her sacrifice but also making her the villain that suddenly wants to rule the universe makes it seem that from a narrative perspective 343i don’t really care and just want to put on a cool show.
Let Chief save humanity and then who knows maybe go to all the Halos and make them useless so nobody can use them and threaten all sentinel life again. Also it would be good to visit all the Halos to burn down the storage where they most probably still have Flood spore ready to escape again and kill all life.
Heroes always end up either making a sacrifice which do end up saving a lot of people or they end up getting with the one they love but John has made those sacrifices for a long time now, always willing to give himself up for the greater good and I think it’s about time we get a hero that can give their life up but don’t have a problem with them surviving though they expected to die and don’t need to end up with a wife and kids but can do what they always have done which is protect humanity, whatever the cost.
I want Chief to survive and I don’t need to know what he does after Halo Infinite and I don’t need anymore halo games after this, all I care about is knowing that he is still alive (in game of course I’m not crazy)

Well you said it yourself. Chief has lost many people and has overcome his loss and continued his journey. But do you think it would be fair for those who died for chief? Who sacrificed themselves for chief ? And in the end chief end ups living. Am not saying that he shouldn’t, but I think that’s how a heroic legend should end. That’s the one only way, fans will feel the end of this series. Chief is a human inside. He has lost people he cared about, but I think the time is around the clock that now it’s his turn. One final effort. Tho I will only recommend killing off chief in the final mainline halo game, when there isnt any other threat remaining and the galaxy is brought to peace . And I think halo infinite should be the last one (mainline) . Think about iron man. How well his story arc is brought to an end. I don’t stand at all with the 10 year plan . Infinite should have been the last one.

There is about two people who has died for Chief (which I know of), Samuel and Cortana. Samuel died for Chief when he took a shot for him which Chief already had done for him and Cortana who was in late stages of rampancy and would not survive so she choose to save Chief instead of them both dying. I would agree that John should die if the trilogy was done right, then I would think that a heroic sacrifice would be the way to go. Fans have felt the end of this series since 343 took over because they haven’t done much right to the chief story. Iron man arc was done right and Chief arc was done right until halo 5, then the narrative changed completely and when seen from the whole picture, it’s a mess and looking at Iron man arc from the whole picture its a masterpiece.
Master chief story can only end in one way and I’m not naive to that, It will end in a sacrifice but this is not the trilogy to do it. Do I want more Master chief story games? No, cause now it’s the time to end it before 343i screws up even more than they already have but I am not willing to let it be by the hands of Cortana or by a Banished leader with corny lines! Or Even the ring to be his death. Halo 4 would had been perfect but that chance is over. John should be in cryosleep until he is needed again which is if halo Infinite is the last game will be never which will allow me to sleep great.

I think that maybe we should end it here, we both have our own opinion of how this series should end and thats great! I also think that we have the same opinion about Chief end but we have different opinion about WHEN that end should come and IF that ending should even be shown. We both has shown good points and I think we will probably just go around in circles if this discussion continues but if you want to add something more I will of course read and answer it…
For me whether I want her to live and return to Chief/UNSC depends on why/how she was corrupted. If H5’s explanation really is all there is to her doing what she did/is doing, kill her. End that horribly written mess and move on.

You are right ,I guess. I don’t play much multiplayer. So all I care about right now is a good story and a good conclusion to whoever is gonna die in infinite (probably cortana, bro hammer…chief?) And I want the trilogy to conclude as fast as it can before 343 decides to -Yoink- it up. Tho I believe they are not done with cortana, yet. Remember every mainline halo had chief and cortana, both together. one of the many reasons I hated halo 5 campaign was because cortana and chief weren’t together. I am not trying to pull some waifu -Yoink- but that’s the truth man. Chief and cortana are made for each other. Halo is about them.

With Halo Infinite and their free to play multiplayer the only thing I’m interested of that game is indeed the campaign and them making a good story. I also didn’t like Halo 5 campaign but for different reasons. I unfortunately also disagree on that Halo is just about Chief and Cortana but that is another topic discussion which I will not get into xD
We can only hope that 343 don’t screw up again because if they do I will request a refund…
I honestly don’t believe the Cortana in H5 was the real deal. I have a theory that it was the forerunner A.I. Intrepid Eye that Oni was holding prisoner on the Argent Moon. We know she got into the computer systems an was basically going through humanities history. She came across Cortana and the Master Chief in the files and drew up a plan to remove the mantle of responsibility from mankind.
She was also in working with a splinter group of the Banished causing as much damage to the UNSC and human world’s as she could from her ‘prison’. It wouldn’t have been to hard to impersonate Cortana and convince the other A.I. that immortality was possible if they contacted the domain. Once they contacted the Domain I believe that she destroyed the A.I. thus leaving humanity relatively defenceless and a coordinated attack with the Banished would bring them to their knees in a matter of weeks. Don’t forget Intrepid Eye is a top tier forerunner A.I. who saw human A.I. as nothing more than annoying insects.
As for the real Cortana I think she is alive but in a dormant state inside the Domain, where she will wake up join back up with the Chief and be more than a match for Intrepid Eye. When the Librarian altered the Chiefs D.N.A. in H4 so the composer wouldn’t affect him he asked Cortana if she saw what happened she replied yes she did. Now a human A.I. would be a child’s toy for a forerunner especially the Librarian, she could easily rewrite Cortana’s code and slove her rampancy issues, she could also have changed the Chief’s D.N.A. to help him on the road to humanity taking on the mantle of responsibility and bringing peace to the galaxy.

I dig the first two paragraphs a lot. That seems fun. I wonder if the Librarian set Halo5 Cortana in motion when she was stolen away. If she made a copy there, it would have been destroyed with Requiem. If she set up ANYTHING that’ll come to fruition, that’d be fun to see play out.
