The new campaign overview shows her for about a second, but that’s it. Will she not have a prominent role in the game? Is she on the Harbinger’s side? Or is she the ultimate big bad? If she’s not the big bad, then what do we think happened to Cortana?
I think she became a villain but idk tho.
What I got from the trailer is that:
- Something has happened to Cortana (missing or who knows what, there is a crashed Guardian in the trailer, so…)
- The Chief is trying to figure out what happen to Cortana (Zeta Halo will apparently have the answers.)
- So far the ultimate bad guys are, Escharum (the big bad brute) & The Harbinger (floating teleporting lady.)
- This is continuing Halo 5’s story, so Cortana is guaranteed and will most likely have a very prominent role in the game.

I don’t think they are going to pull a surprise “she’s still the villain”. If they had wanted that they would have just followed directly on from Halo 5 instead of the mystery of where she’s gone and why a Guardian is crashed on Zeta Halo.
Either shes gone for good or the Chief is going to get her back, cured of rampancy and all that. How that happens I suspect has something to do with the weapon. If there’s fragments of her floating around, they end up merging with this other AI, where does one start and the other end…
The crashed Guardian and Promethean weapons do make me wonder if they’re entirely washing their hands of those story elements. Personally, I always thought Chief promised to save Cortana from rampancy and so it’s all just building up to that. You don’t give her an army of anti Flood robots for no reason.
I think the Harbinger has some connection to or is a Precursor. With that she would have control over the Domain and could destroy Cortana.

This is the worst possible outcome. She should have no redemption arc, not curing, nothing. If shes not dead already, she should be killed by Chiefs hands. For me, thats the ONLY acceptable option if shes still alive.
As for them not just sticking with the created arc? People really dislike it (yes some like it, but in the grand scope of perception its viewed negatively). Doing a soft reboot and making that the focus only undermines any story they want to tell. Infinite needs to wrap up the created arc while also introducing new arcs to be addressed. Does it have to do both in one campaign? No, but it def needs to do the latter at minimum.

In the game’s defense, there is still a lot of unknow details we don’t know about. The game fast forwards long after Halo 5’s ending and within that time period, a lot can happen (I imagine we will be given somewhat of a catchup on the past/current events.) Also, Halo 5 in general was bad in the eyes of the majority of the fan base, so you can’t exactly blame 343 for changing things up story wise. 343 I believe have said themselves that Halo Infinite is still continuing the created story, although it seems they are keeping A LOT of details a secret.

That’s a big no for me on the hate and kill Cortana thing you have going on there. The only reason she bad now is do to the Halo 5 story writer not knowing what halo even was. The right thing to do is to cut out Halo 5 form Halos story and rewrite the characters from the game back in with hunt the truth. Hell we mite gite the fight between Locke and master chief don right this time.
No idea other than most likely related to the hologram structure she’s looking at in the campaign overview, guess we’ll find out in 5 weeks
maybe the ending of the campaign will set up cortana for the first dlc which may be to do with the structure she was looking at in the trailer.
From what I’ve seen and read, it seems t me:
Early part of Infinite is all unseen so far, except for a snippet in an earlier trailer about “The Weapon”, where she indicated she may have engaged in her primary goal.
So, Infinite begins 6 months prior to Chief floating in space. Stuff goes down around Zeta Halo, UNSC Vs Cortana and her Guardians (probably not many though, those things can interdict a solar system solo).
The “going down” is rather significant and both sides are down for the count, or, Cortana is and the UNSC is having the “Prevented Armageddon #942 After Party”, when along come The Banished and blow the house down.
Do I think Cortana is gone?
No.
Because we have “The Weapon”. And Cortana is smart enough to take an out if it’s all that’s left to her. Such as… Merging with a sibling AI made from a clone of the same brain that she was. Or at least, hiding inside it.
That’s just my take though. When I first saw one of the earlier Infinite trailers I was so happy because it really does seem like they’re not sweeping 4 and 5 under the rug, but actually continuing and building in the story they’ve progressed. That holds a lot more value to me than just arm waving it away because some vocal folks didn’t like those games.

Short answer is: no one can answer you this questions right now.
Why don’t you simply wait for the game to be released and find it out yourself?
They probably don’t want to reveal too much and the Banished is definitely the focus of Infinite.
Cortana is still enemy #1 in the galaxy though.
Here is my rough guess of what happened to Cortana:
the Weapon states “I was meant to imitate Cortana and lock her down for retrieval.” This appears to not have worked and Cortana was “deleted” but not by the Weapon.
While We do not know where Cortana is, or whether she’ll be present, or just in flashbacks, I do not think she will be the big bad, or a big bad at all. Echerum and the Harbinger fill that role in Infinite. After the backlash 343i got for Cortana’s resurrection and evil turn, I doubt they’ll continue that plot forward. The Harbinger seems to have taken the role that the Didact had in 4 and Cortana had in 5. A harried of humans for one reason or another and a firm believe that humanity “is not the future”.

Because it’s fun to theorize?

Honestly, I’d be fine if they didn’t kill her off.
Like, if you were to ask me after Halo 4 if Cortana needed to come back to life my reaction would undoubtedly be “he** no, she had the perfect send off” but now that they went through the trouble of bringing her back, turning her evil, and making her a galactic superpower they might as well keep her for future story elements… especially since Infinite is supposedly going to be a 10 year game with story expansions.

The marketing has definitely made it seem like either the Harbinger or Echerum will be the main antagonist, but I am curious to see how Cortana will fit in the equation seeing as how we last saw her as a villain.
I would make the guess that there are “factions” (with Cortana and the Prometheans being one of them) in the game but 343 has not said anything about factions nor have we seen any Prometheans yet to indicate as much.

This. I like to pretend H5 never existed.

I suspect that we will discover there is a significant retcon of sorts happening around Cortana. I wouldn’t be surprised if the big reveal was either that A: Cortana has a different plan that’s less evil and we’ve misunderstood her, B: Cortana is gone forever after going rampant, in order to preserve her legacy, as she was actually being manipulated by someone like the Harbinger. Or, C: That Cortana actually died in Halo 4 and the Harbinger was manipulating Chief.
Either way, I would be surprised if she isn’t redeemed to some extent.

How do you misunderstand galaxy wide domination? It was pretty clear on what she wanted in H5.
