Cortana

Halo 4 told a really deep story and really pulled the audience into the deep emotional story of Cortana and the MC. I for one am reminded every time I watch that final cut scene or hear her audio how important she has been to the Halo universe and how much I am going to miss her considering she doesn’t return in Halo 5. Despite her not being the main protagonist or the shining hero in the suit of armor, I think it is important to remember that she was Chiefs rock / foundation. She held him together and made all that happened within our story possible. So here is to Cortana.

Comment with speculation for the future or your favorite moments involving Cortana

Edit: This was a pretty good fan made trailer that has some good dialogue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Tc_58S5XXw

He knew her for three months, how was she his rock? I always thought it was insulting to Chief as a character when people say he’s going to fall apart and that he’s going to abandon the UNSC to revive her, or spur some emotional journey to find his “humanity”. He’s lost spartans that he’s known his whole life and continued on fighting.

It’s true enough that he didn’t know her nearly as long as it seems (3 months being fairly accurate), but I don’t think she can quite be compared to other Spartans that Chief has lost. Spartans are basically sociopathic and don’t form connections with others easily. The only “person” that Chief came close to forming a relationship with was Sgt. Johnson. The bond he had with Cortana was much different than a bond that two people would share. She was - for all intents and purposes - inside him; they were pretty much a singular being. When she died, it was like Chief lost a piece of himself rather than a comrade.

“Promise me you’ll figure out which one of us is the machine.”

That is the opening scene of Halo 4. It explains how Cortana held chief together I think, but also do you really think that the MC would have made it through any of the events without her? I mean come on, don’t underplay her role just because YOU think she is disposable. Also I think it is clear he had an emotional connection with her as we saw at the end of Halo 4, I mean how could he not… Without her he wouldn’t be who he is and he most certainly wouldn’t of made it this far.

Don’t forget about Blue Team.

So much this.

Don’t forget Sam. One of John’s best friends died in Fall of Reach. They had known each other since childhood, and bam, dead. John was stricken by that. John will, of course, be stricken by Cortana’s death, but he’s not going to fall apart. No way.

She means a lot to him, but he will not break. They’ve been through a lot together, but that isn’t the first time Chief has experienced loss of that magnitude. She was important to him before, and she passed away. I don’t want to play a game where it’s all about Master Chief dealing with the loss of Cortana. It should play a vital role, sure, but it should in no way be at the top of his mind when there’s danger in the galaxy. That’s why I hope Halo 5 will have the same sense of urgency other Halos had.

My favorite Halo campaigns are CE and Halo 4. And it’s because I love playing missions where it is just Chief and Cortana, an objective, a mysterious world, and incredible odds. There is that sense of just being lost with only a talking computer in your head for company and hope.

Don’t get me wrong, I love running around babysitting marines and such, but for me missions like “Two Betrayals”, “Keyes”, “Requiem”, “Forerunner” are the best.

It’s kind of crazy to think that all the events from Reach until the end of Halo 4 is only a span of 5ish years. Even crazier Master Chief spent almost 4 years total in cryo sleep and that he really hasn’t spent that much time with Cortana. Even with all that said, MC and Cortana went through quite a bit together in the short time they had. To me that doesn’t down play the relationship that was developed at all. John is human and we as humans can become attached emotionally very easy and quickly, whether it’s another human, animal or in this case an AI. I mean, heck, we all became attached in some sort of essence to this game called Halo.

My speculation. Halo is a video game catered to a main audience of male teenagers. Those of us who were there from the beginning was once that teenager or young adult that Cortana appealed to. Over the years Cortana has gathered the attention from many young women which is just as important. So from a business point of view why get rid of something that isn’t broken. I feel Cortana will continue to be included in the franchise one way or another.

Oh he absolutely won’t fall apart. He’s freaking Master Chief. The point I was trying to make though is that cortana’s death hit him harder than most others would have. It won’t make him fall apart, but he also won’t be able to shrug it off as quickly as he did Johnson’s death (still mad about how Chief doesn’t seem to care that he died even after all they had been through).
