So I’ve seen this idea float around before, but I’ve found something that supports it if not confirms it. Hate self-promotion, but if you are unaware of who Mendicant Bias is, read this. Long story short, he was a Forerunner AI who betrayed the Forerunners for the Flood and after 100,000 years helped Master Chief escape the Ark.
This is Mendicant Bias as seen in Halo Legends: Origins I. Look in the middle at the symbol, this is known as the Iris symbol. It was used during Halo 3’s ARG and seems to have been adopted by 343i. Now look at this picture of Cortana’s eye, there is is again!
So, could this, along with rampancy, explain her erratic behavior? How do you think this will affect the rest of the game?

To add on to the discussion, how this will affect the game could be very interesting. For one, there could be scenes where she is trying to resist Medicant Bias’ control and whatnot.

And with that screen that shows her face, let’s hope it’s not like Halo 3.
You forgot 2 major things: first mendicant bias exited rampancy and tried to connect with the Chief through Halo 3’s terminals, seeking redemption by helping the humans. Second he was most likely destroyed with the Ark, and even if he survived hes on the good side now.

Oh I make no assumption Bias is evil, just simply he controls Cortana. What that would translate into…that’s up in the air.

Hope not…
I was kinda suggesting it could happen both in-game and cut scenes (But mainly cut scenes).
If it does happen in-game, I don’t want to be walking very slow when it occurs.
Interesting theory never really thought about mendicant bias being involved but he was probably destroyed by the uncompleted halo ring when it fired in the ark
I’ve always like this theory, I forget the name of the thread on Bungie.net, but there was a giant essay written about how M.Bias was scattered around the galaxy. That thread made me think that this sort of thing could happen too. But I get a sour taste in my mouth now knowing that he sent Chief as an atonement, only to be greeted on Requiem with angry Forerunner defenses. Unless that was Bias’ plan all along… to get Chief killed. But that seems a little far fetched.
Being under Bias’s control is a possibility. The symbol could also simply represent Cortana going into rampancy, since Bias is well known for that. Or maybe Bias shares information with Cortana at one point. :o

Things may not be going how Bias thought they would. And if he does see the evil in front of him, then the “I will not allow you to leave this planet!” line makes sense. Keeping the evil on Requiem can help humanity.

Yeah, that line does make a lot more sense if its in this scenario. Man, Halo 4 is going to be one hell of a story…
> Is Mendicant Bias the only one with that sign? Cortana was created with some Forerunner info, correct? So maybe it’s just a common Forerunner sign associated with AIs.

> Then again, the avatar is just the AI’s choice of how to represent itself. Why would there be signs of control on the avatar…unless Mendicant Bias wants MC and Cortana to know, which may be a reason for Cortana’s stability in future Halos…if 343i should so choose.

Yeah she’s an illegal A.I.
If my memory is correct, Halsey cloned her own brain.

Kinda shocked when I first read about that part in Halsey’s diary
