From what I’ve seen in the most recent trailer and experienced in the prior games, I believe Cortana may already be rampant and their arrival at Requiem far from incidental.
She mentions in the trailer that “I was put into service 8 years ago, AI’s deteriorate after seven.”
As she has obviously not died, she may may be rampant at this point, delivering the Master Chief to whatever fate awaits him on the shield world. Who knows she’s been mulling over in that “noggin” of hers while the MC was sleep, or who she came in contact with for that matter. Add to that the fact that this “ancient evil” seems to expect the MC with the “I have long dreamt of this day Reclaimer” line
Couple that with how strangely she acted all throughout Halo 3, I would say that she may be one of the antagonist, along with the “ancient evil,” of Halo 4.
On a side note, I doubt that this is the Didact, which has been theorized in other posts. I’d put my money on the Primordial or even the Master Builder before the Didact.
You and my friend have the same theory about Cortana i do think Precursors wi play a big part mid game in H4 as a sort of cliffhanger maybe or plot twist. As the primordial said 'It is your duty to kill me so that another can be released" Also one of the dictionary definitions is from the begging i cant think of anything more ancient then that. Forerunners just dont really seem all that Ancient to me.
Well, Cortana is not responsible for sending Chief to Requiem, Mendicant Bias was. She also isn’t an ancient evil. Not ancient by a long shot and rampancy doesn’t really mean evil. Crazy sure, but evil? Unlikely.

Which book was your first point from? Finishing up on the second book of the forerunner saga myself.
I didn’t imply that she was the ancient evil mentioned but that she may be an additional antagonist. When AIs go rampant, from my understanding, they pretty much turn into V.I.K.I from “I, Robot.” May not be inherently evil, but capable of doing things contrary to human interest? Likely
Thanks for your insight though

Halo 3 Terminals.

Not necessarily. One AI, Mac I believe, worked on Harvest and was past the seven year period and displayed signs of rampancy yet didn’t injure humans. Might not be the case with Cortana, but who really knows how she’ll act.
Shes gonna go crazy, take over the infinity, and lock everybody inside
thats my theory

It’s possible that Cortana wasn’t even talking to the Chief at that point, but to someone or something else. But who knows?
Her rampancy was affected by her interactions with the Gravemind, Mendicant Bias, and all the other Forerunner stuff, but with unknown effects yet.
Personally, I think her rampancy is inevitable, but I like to think that no matter how sick she becomes, she won’t do anything to harm Chief.
Oh, and I agree with you thinking that the Didact won’t be the enemy.
I’m starting to think so too. It may not be the Didact, but something else. Could be the Primordial. The way Primordium ended though makes me think Chakas, or a clone of 343 Guilty Spark took over the ship mentioned in the book, which we know now as the UNSC Infinity, and crashed it on Requiem.

- Just Chakas, no clone of Spark.
- Chakas didn’t jack the Infinity, he put the crew of the ship he took in cryo, everyone is active on the Infinity.

Whats your reasoning behind the did act not being the main enemy? Im just curious, after seeing the E3 presentation I thought it was him for sure.
Just for the record, Im still reading the forerunner trilogy, i just bought cryptum and im 1/3 done. Don’t worry about spoilers, I ruined some of cryptum and a little of primordial but im still going to read it.

It seems unlikely to be the Didact as his quarrel is not directly with the humans. Also, his relationship with the Librarian and her views on the Humans, particularly how much she cares for them, also comes to mind.
The Master Builder, on the other hand, is sort of a “Forerunner-Elitist” (or Builder-Elitist, seeing as how he doesn’t value any of the lower-ranking classes) and could care less about the human race or any other race for that matter. You’ll find out how big of an a-hole he is in Halo: Cryptum.
Also, a lot of the things the Master Builder has done go in direct contradiction to the Mantle. Lastly, no one knows if he indeed died on Installation 07. Could it be that he’s in his own Cryptum until the right time…? I guess we have to wait and see.
Not saying that there’s no way it can be the Didact, seeing how there is evidence that we’ve seen in the most recent trailer that suggest it could be, I’m just saying my money is not on him.

There’s a lot of stuff pointing to him, but I just can’t see it. The Precursors seem way more likely to me.

Mack, Loki, and Juliana are some of the only AIs to stave off Rampancy. Mack and Loki managed to survive by switching with each other. One would be active in his core, and the other would be kept inside of the JOTUNs.
Juliana, however, managed to fend off rampancy because she had a sense of duty; protecting the people of the Rubble. Which really begs the question on how Cortana didn’t do such a good job of staying sane, even though she had a duty.
Also, Contact Harvest showed us Sif going rampant, yet it doesn’t match what was happening with Cortana. Sif starts laughing at the idea of being angry with her creators, and confesses her love for another AI, and Cortana becomes completely detached from reality whenever she enters one of her “episodes”. So, I guess every AI experiences Rampancy differently?
Cortana should be given something from Docter Halsey that allows her to have more time and energy to live.
Master chief and Cortana… PARTNERS!!!
