I believe at the end of the game, Cortana actually teleported Chief outside the ship. When you prime the Nuke it immediately white outs, which is something that happens when you pass through a teleporter in the game. When he wakes and finds himself encased in a hard-light shield, you can actually see the stars on the other side, clearly indicating he is outside the ship. Cortana actually confirms this with her dialog.
“Most of me is down there. I only held enough back to get you off the ship.”
After a few minutes the shield drops as the ship explodes and we see its debris “fall” all around him. So the Chief did not have a Nuke explode in his face, nor did the hard-light shield protect him directly from the explosion.
I was just thinking about it as I watched the scene and decided I would share. Last I remember people were still confused as to how he survived, how the shield protected him and how she managed to project it. Hope this helps.
IF the ship had the kind of teleportation network to do that it’s makers/you wouldn’t have bothered with the telleportation points that you need to find throughout the level.
Do note that the hard light walls and floor and ceiling are coming from absolutely NOWHERE.
(and it would be impossible for Cortana to project herself from a hard light bridge, that things only meant to be used as a bridge that can be turned on and off. )

That type of Teleportation grid existed on Alpha and Delta Halo so why not the Didact’s ship? Remember in Halo: CE Cortana used it but she only recommended they try it once and her doing so now would count as only once. The Didact also fought her presence in the system and she had to do her best to use the standard portals but when he activated the bomb the Didact was gone and couldn’t have continued to fight her in his system. She would have had free unrestricted access to his systems.

It probably would have come from the ship somewhere. Just because they didn’t show anything, it doesn’t mean there wasn’t some kind of beam leading back to the ship or something. Considering the amount of Hard-light technology which makes up a Forerunner ship, it could have come from just about any part of it.

I had not considered teleportation but that makes perfect sense. As for the source of the hard light. I still maintain that Cortana was drawing energy from the (nearby) Infinity.

That can’t possibly work either. The infinity has no hardlight emitters. You can’t create something from nothing.
> I think it’s been established (sort of) that the activation index is mad of hardlight. Thus, Cortana is able to “download” the index in halo: CE.

That’s also a good point. The Index appears to be a self sustaining Hard-light object.
The part where Chief is speaking to Cortana in the shield, the ship had yet to explode. You know it explodes as Cortana leaves and the shield begins to fade away as debris becomes visible around him.
