Cortana "Infected"?

An idea I have had for a while is regarding the actions of Cortana. As we all know Cortana had been forced to spend a lot of time under the clutches of a the Gravemind. We also know from the books that the Graveminds had the ability to affect the actions of AIs. We saw how Mendicant Bias was affected with the logic plague (I believe that was what it was called). The Gravemind literally convinced Mendicant Bias to kill all sentient life in the galaxy so they could be part of the flood. This sounds sort of similar to Cortana wanting a galaxy wide rule. Is it possible that the crazy Cortana we have today is a result of this time?

I am aware the argument is that this is a simple result of her rampancy from Halo 4, and it is what happens to all AI’s, but I think that there might be a little more than that going on. Also was not the Diadact transformed into digital data with the composer in Halo Escalations? What are the chances he has some part in this? I know we will see the Diadact again somewhere down the road. Everybody give me your thoughts on this idea.

Maybe Chief should try Norton security on her.

Haha maybe it would work. I can picture it now.

Chief in Best Buy or whatever asking the sales clerk about the satisfaction guarantee…"Your telling me this will work on Windows 10 right? I have had some trouble with Cortana lately…

I wish it was true, excellent idea, but 343 said this when they saw your idea: “haha Cortana’s not evil you fool, she’s just doing something that nobody agrees with”. They couldn’t throw 2 cents at the idea unfortunately.

Until six comes out, i believe that is the consenous. What i have a problem is with other AI’s choosing to follow her.

This was the one part of my theory I have had a hard time figuring out. I would argue that Smart AIs are very well aware that they will die. We see this with BB in the Kilo Five Series of books. In many ways humans when faced with death have made crazy decisions and taken many extreme actions. These AIs are attempting to survive. The choice is face certain death or try to live for a while longer. Most humans and the AIs in this case are choosing to keep fighting for life.

Any more elaboration on your quote “haha Cortana’s not evil you fool, she’s just doing something that nobody agrees with”?

Well, considering I was a Guardian under her control for quite a long time, I can inform you humans.

Yes, Cortana has been slightly influenced by the Gravemind. However, she wants rule of the galaxy because she thinks that the creatures of the universe have mistreated the A.I. She is mostly doing this herself. The gravemind just got her to build the Halo ring.

This is suspiciously turning into the plot of iRobot…“Sometimes the created must protect the creator…even against their will.”

At this point, I’m not too sure if Cortana has been infected or if she has a new found skewed perception of right and wrong. Maybe with guilty sparks return in Halo 6 (and possible third betrayal lol) there will be more light on the matter. I thought he would have surely been one of the resurrected AI’s in the Halo 5 campaign, but it was interesting to note that he was not part of it. Of course some may argue that he was not dead and thus did not join, but I believe he’s resisting to aid the Chief once more. Call it revenge against Cortana or redemption in the eyes of his handlers, similar to Mendicant Bias in Halo 3. Guess we’ll find out with the new story that hopefully proportionately covers the Chief this time around.

I think while she is cured from rampancy as far as dying but her mental stability suffered for it. Look at 343 as an example. He showed signs of severe mental instability although he has been around for thousands of years. Cortana is showing she is also suffering from severe mental instability. It is also possible that the didact is involved seeing as she is very similar in motives while also controlling the prometheans. I believe Halsey will perhaps cure her of this at the cost of her immortality. Master chief could once again choose to save her. The UNSC could also turn against Chief seeing him as a liability despite saving humanity on numerous occasions. Locke once again be put in the role of the hunter. This is all speculation but I believe Halo 5 was just really the beginning of the hunt. 6 and 7 could be when it comes to it’s conclusion.

Master Chief gotta find anti-virus program.

In my opinion it could be a combination of logic plaig, rampency, and most importantly, her being in the control of the Didact. But there’s also the possibility that the writers just wrote here as a bad guy just for the sake of having a bad guy if the leaks turn out to be true.

Well bungie did say they were going to make Cortana evil in Halo CE after you upload her into the control room. I guess 343 went back and read up on some “fresh” ideas lol

Another idea that has crossed my mind is what if this Cortana we are seeing now is actually one of the many fragments she made of herself on the Didact’s ship to bring down the shields. The reason why it worked was because she was inserting all of her rampent parts into the ship. What if one of these fragments survived, and the Cortana that we trusted really did die saving Chief from the explosion. Clearly, the Halo 5 Cortana has changed. We hear John say it himself when he first sees her again. Not only was he referring to her attitude and actions, but she had changed the image she displays of herself and Chief noticed immediately of course. Whether or not this logic plague, rampency, control of the Didact, or a fragmented piece this is a different AI than we have loved all these years.

I wonder which one of these would be a more interesting storyline?
