Just watching the E3 Campaign Gameplay & this caught my eye

The silhouette seems to be Cortana, any other opinions?

There’s a theory that it’s the Domain causing these visions trying to lure Chief. So it may not actually be her, but an illusion.

Yeah, true. I just assumed she was gone data chip wise and maybe she took on a different form? Kind of how the Ur-Didact used the composer to turn the ancient humans into Prometheans, but in reverse. Hope she’s actually gone though, and it’s the Domain behind her appearance as MrMartini85 said.

This had been confirmed by 343. Either it was Josh Holmes or Frank O’ Connor, but one of them said that it was the “Ghost of Cortana.”
She did die in Halo 4, and therefore they are just visions. So MrMartini85 is probably correct.

I saw this someplace else - is it just a fan theory, or does someone have something to go on? I thought I saw someone on youtube claim that they got this same theory from somewhere vaguely official (some canon video, do not remember, did not look for it), and was pissed that something was being spoiled.
So yeah, here we go:
Game Informer outlined a sequence from the gameplay preview they had, that seems to line up with the footage we’ve seen. Chief falls into a cave of some sort and sees Cortana, who babbles on about the Domain. Frankie referred to this as the “ghost of Cortana”. What it truly is remains to be seen. So we will see and hear her… In some form. The story really does look and sound awesome.

Its a fan theory, but its mostly spawned from the information we know.
- Frankie commented on the exact scene with the ‘cortana’ image about honoring her legacy and her fate in H4 being clear. So she’s dead Jim.
- She talks about the domain in the one clip we had. She can’t just be a ghost or memory if she’s giving chief new information.
- One of the vidocs has a scene talking about chief not being prepared emotionally to confront her. So, if she’s dead, he has to be confronting something that is appearing to be her.
- The E3 demo has chief going awol, and the Warden Eternal saying Chief has been called. He also claims he is the guardian of the domain an her secrets.
- There’s been some promotion about chief being a traitor, which presumably extends beyond more than just Hunt the Truth. Presumably chief is still a good guy, so either he’s being manipulated (like the gravemind has in the past), or the UNSC is just wrong. Which one do you think makes a more interesting narrative?It’s not 100% clear its the domain manipulating him, but unless you say frankie is lieing (which he got very mad at people for accusing him of lately) it means something, very likely forerunner related is using Cortana’s image to manipulate chief.

But nah, as others have said it has been confirmed that Chief is seeing the ghost of Cortana. The popular theory is that the Domain is using her image in order to guide Chief to some sort of goal. I initially pinged the Gravemind as a culprit for such trickery given he pulled the same thing to the Librarian before the Halo Array wiped out life on Earth, but the Domain is apparently a living being too so it works just as well.

Thank you for the info, I knew some of it, but not all, and had not put it together (probably because in the sub-area’s of my mind, I so not want to be spoiled, at least not too much).
EDIT - now that I think about it, knowing that Cortana visions are what they may be, it’s not much of a spoiler if you think about it. The second his visions start to tell him to do things in real life and alert him of something he didn’t know, it is kind of obvious it cannot really be her or just a psychological flashback-like thing.

Wouldn’t the Halo’s have killed it off? Or was enough contained on a Shield World or Ark-like?
I’m going to be a saaad panda if Cortana doesn’t somehow come back or at the very least they write the story so that Chief’s actions are heavily influenced by her previous guidance.
What would be really awesome is if Catherine Halsey personally fixed Cortana. Cortana WAS created in her likeness.

This would be awesome, if anyone could do it it would be Halsey.
I believe that Cortana is dead.
