Cortana Humming Speculation

I know this is a little late to mention but if you listen to her hum at the end of the game, it sounds identical to the piano melody in the first cutscene with Halsey! Why? I need answers!

I assume you have heard the explanation that it is the tune of olly olly oxen free. Especially coupled with the end of Halo Wars 2, it makes a lot of sense.

thanks I will check it out

I couldn’t find it on his channel, but I did find another video that played the two side by side and, I’ve got a pretty good ear, they are, in fact, the same songs. What that means, I don’t know.

It’s likely made as a parallel between Halsey and Cortana. Cortana was made from a cloned brain of Halsey so she is capable of having some of her memories and this song was Halsey’s favorites so that’s why she knows the song. The fact that she was singing it is probably to parallel the fact that Halsey made John a Spartan which Cortana said it was “forced on him” in Halo 5 and says that what she’s doing is a “gift”. She can’t see the fact that what she’s doing is “the same” as what Halsey did, forcing a massive change to people whether they like it or not and seeing it as a good thing.
It’s the main reason I can think of but I may be wrong but if so I think it was a cool idea.

I don’t care if it’s not the “real” answer, that’s a pretty doggone good hypothesis.

I’d like to believe it’s olly olly oxen free which is the all clear Blue Team used in the EU. Why she hums this and how it plays out are questions open for speculation… possibly, she’s tempting Blue Team to come to the Halo or telling other AIs it’s safe to join her. I’m just speculating, though, to be honest.

The Oly Oly Oxen Free reference is the tone that leads Chief and Blue Team to the controls on Genesis. That’s why they all keyed in on it when they heard it.

It has deeper meaning than that… in the EU, they use it during their Spartan training as children which is why Cortana uses it on Genesis. She knows they recognize it which, to me, means more than those that just assume she pulled it out of nowhere in the game.

Thanks, I was aware of the deeper meaning. That’s what I meant by Blue keying in on it when they heard it. I’m re-reading FoR for like the 12th time now.

I have been listening to theories about this subject but i realized something Olly Olly Oxen Free meant all clear for Blue Team Right? And if it does, the Ring that was shown at the Legendary Ending it could mean that she is trying to “Cleanse” the Universe like the Forerunners with the Flood. And when Cortana said that she would wake Blue Team in 10,000 years that would basically be when everything would be “Perfect” in her image like the Librarian did with the Didact. So basically her humming Olly Olly Oxen Free at the Legendary Ending could mean she is trying to kill everyone with the Rings

The tune in the intro and legendary ending is not Olly Olly Oxen Free, but Claude Debussy’s Préludes No. 4: Les sons et les parfums tournent dans l’air du soir
Debussy is one of Halsey’s favourite composers

I think the fan theories have added more weight to it. Honestly with how poor 5’s story was I think it was simply meant to be menacing.

There’s a recurring theme in Halo 5 that Cortana hates Halsey despite being essentially a digital clone of her. This is done to reinforce the notion of her being a hypocrite. So when Chief confronts her and he says you aren’t different than when Halsey kidnapped us her rebuke is “that monster forced you this is a gift”. Plus Halsey directly says this to Locke on Sangelios that Cortana is dangerous because they both think in terms of “the greater good”; except that mentality is now projected into a Forerunner-level AI. It comes up a lot. So them both liking the same music is an embellishment of that idea. When she sings Halseys song you are meant to think that she’s like Halsey and would use that Halo for the “greater good”.

Plus it starts and ends with the same song which is a neat bit of pacing.

It makes Cortana sound insane that she’s humming like a maniac as she turns a Halo on. This is massive red letters spelling “lost the plot”.

Also, if you view this as part of Halsey storyline, it’s a critique of her that her creation which we see her letting loose into the galaxy at the start of the game has potentially doomed humanity at the end of the game. So it’s suggesting that Halsey doomed humanity.

Interesting. I thought it sounded identical to 343 Guilty Spark. I hadn’t even put together Olly Olly Oxen Free.

She definitely her mothers daughter. When she starts taunting Fireteam Osiris, that is Halsey through and through.

yeah never thought about that but i suppose ur pretty bang on there laddo
