Cortana and Halsey Speculation.

Not sure if this should be in the Universe forum or here. It seems more appropriate here as Universe seems more general while this speculation seems more in line with the next two games.

Probably won’t happen with HXB1 but HXB1 can serve as a prelude to this and giving a why to why this needs to happen.

To me it seems logical that after the events of H4 that the UNSC is going to give Chief a new AI and figure that everything is going to be alright, that they can slap him on the back and have him go kill hoards of squid-heads and save the galaxy from a superweapon just like before.

It also seems logical to me that after spending so much time with Cortana, that Chief won’t bond well with the new AI. Gears will be grinded and so on. It escalates and escalates until we get to what we know: Chief abandoning the UNSC to find Cortana or find a way of bringing her back.

Then in HXB1-2 it happens: Halsey dies uses her own brain, not a clone’s, to make another copy of Cortana. It won’t actually be Cortana because like people, AIs are a product of their environment as well as their “genetics.” This one would be a blank slate. Void of the memories and experiences that Cortana and Chief had.

But Chief could bond and work with this Cortana, not thinking of her as a clone or a replacement, but rather as Cortana’s child.

I don’t see why Halsey was sacrifice her brain to create a new AI which she knows will never be the same as Cortana.

In terms, of the Master Chief getting a new artificial intelligence… is most likely… as it increases Spartans already lightning speed reaction times and combat choices.

In terms of Halsey sacrificing herself for John… in a matter of speaking… she, and the Neo-Librarian, would probably both see it as ascendance to a higher form… immortality. If, and only if, she can sustain her life will she ascend or do something rather rash… she is potentially the Librarian of Humanity… and seeks to know all there is in our galaxy… plus perhaps not what is originated in ours?

This is kind of what I’m expecting for Halsey. She will ascend, be Chief’s new AI companion, yet stable so as to not reach rampancy. For Chief it will be mixed feelings. Cortana was patterned after her. However, Halsey is very different. She is a much more powerful force/mind, IMO. Also being Chief’s “mother” so-to-speak, could make things uncomfortable for him.

Perhaps he would seek a way to integrate any remnants of Cortana and Halsey into one, hoping that Cortana would take over?

This area is ripe for 343 to explore. I hope they do something that the majority of us like. I honestly was upset that they “killed off” Cortana. IMO, she was the second best character in the campaign, with only Chief being better.

Halsey the Librian of Humanity… Sounds very fitting…

I don’t think Halsey would do such thing .
I’m sure Masterchief is going to find Halsey and try to get Cortana back , thats for sure . But I don’t think it will end up with Halsey being dead . she Build Cortana once by using a clone , why can’t she do it again ?

Because it is illegal and she lacks the equipment currently to make a clone of her brain or the machines needed to make an AI.

Ah, but if she’s able to reunite the two halves of the Janus Key, she’ll have MORE than enough technology at her disposal. Perhaps it’s Halsey that sends Chief out on missions to bring back specific tech to reanimate Cortana?

Hmm, that would make sense for the open-world rumor.

The only thing is, 343 would need to clear up in a hurry, Halsey’s being abducted by Jul 'Mdama.

Man, I can’t wait for E3. I really hope we hear more than just the rumored Halo 2 Anniversary news. I’m craving for NEW Halo, not rehashed, no matter how good that might have been.

Who said anything about Catherine Elizabeth Halsey dieing? What I said was she ascends… to a higher form.

She is in-fact pushing 67, by 2558… however she does commit to a Eulogy of Noble Six in 2589… making her 97… yet the fact that it was only audio and no view of what her form was… she could become a meta-physical ancilla… via the composer… like the Monitors or the Prometheans… more so the monitors though.

Anyway about the conclusion of Halsey directing John… via the Janus Key… She would probably find Mendicant Bias… to which she discovers a way to stabilize as a artificial intelligence… and to which she is reborn as a meta-physical ancilla… then she would direct John to find Cortana fragments to which are integrated… the final solution would be a AI of mass sentient and memory of both halves… Cortana/Halsey… maybe they could be conflicting personalities… Halsey being more the mother figure while Cortana the platonic friend…

But anyway I assume three things at least for Catherine Elizabeth Halsey… she would try to get the other half of the Janus Key… she would try to make a new arm… either by cloning, Forerunner mutation or Forerunner composing… in a way. And third make contact with John and the other Spartan-II…

> She will ascend, be Chief’s new AI companion,

It’s a little creepy for Halsey to make a clone of her brain with the purpose but the feeling with that is that Cortana was her daughter.

Her ascending and being a digital intelligence and be the Chief’s companion is creepy and borders close to Oedipus territory given how the SIIs are her children, John even more so.

> I don’t see why Halsey was sacrifice her brain to create a new AI which she knows will never be the same as Cortana.

An exact copy? No, I didn’t imagine the new AI to be.

But the basic premise is that Chief can’t work well, or possibly at all, with any other AI after Cortana’s death. After working with Cortana for so long and so deeply, letting a complete stranger like Roland or BB back into his head might be impossible. This copy of Cortana, while completely different, could work with Chief because she’s seen as a sister or daughter or Cortana.

anyway , if they make a new Cortana , can’t they somehow bring the memories back too ? we know Chief still has Cortana’s chip , and maybe memories are stored in there , so by making a new Cortana and putting her into this chip , they can have the old Cortana back again

Halsey may have been abducted, but she’s 100% willing to work with them against the UNSC now after Palmer shot her. It will be interesting story material should 343 have Chief pursue Halsey without UNSC assistance and see if she helps him or tries to enlist his help against the UNSC.

Also, I’m still not sure pushing out Halo 5 this year is a great idea. I would like a new Halo as well, but I’d also like a new Fallout and a new Elder Scrolls as well this year. They’d all be rushed at this point. We literally have no details besides concept art for Halo 5 and I don’t want them using half of their E3 for Halo alone plus Halo 5 would only be running off of a 2 year dev cycle. Give H2A intact MP and dedicate 2 additional years to Halo 5’s development. That way everyone wins and 343 can use the feedback from H2A to make better choices with Halo 5’s multiplayer.

Her datachip looked like it was destroyed when the console it was put in was disintegrated in Halo 4.

Assimilating all her old knowledge would probably cause rampancy again.

She’s working with them, but I doubt it’s against the UNSC and more against ONI.

Even after all the crap she was put through by the “UNSC” after her rescue from Onyx she still gave half of the Janus key to Thorne.

How about the possibility of Cortana finding a way to have downloaded a part of herself into Chief’s brain? Outside the box thinking, yes. But we are talking about 550 odd years in the future. Perhaps the “real” touch she had with Chief before she disappeared was the download to his brain, or possibly his armor.

There is room for that idea.

I just don’t want to think of Halo’s campaign without Cortana. She’s second only to Chief, IMO, of the most iconic characters of the franchise.
