Controller schemes are a very interesting and subjective topic. I thought that maybe me and some others reading this thread would benefit gameplay-wise from learning your controller scheme, and more specifically what makes it objectively better than others.
So tell us here:
What is your controller scheme, and why is it better than the others?
Mine is Helljumper because of the easy jump-strafing and access to ADS.
I use default because I got used to it and couldn’t change it. I used bumper jumper on previous halos but halo 5 is so different I couldn’t use bumper jumper
I use fish stick because its similar to call of dutys default and that is what Im used to. And I play claw so I don’t have problem crouch strafing with b.
Quick jump/clamber - Quick SmartLink - Very cool layout nameCons:
Have to take semi-claw grip to hit X button and thrust out of Ground Pound - Can be a bit awkward to use left bumper and left trigger simultaneously when doing some of the stabilize jumpsI played on default for the first 6 or so months of playing Halo 5 until I watched a video by Proximitty Cx where he said something along the lines of, “if you think you can hit A to jump and get your thumb back on the right stick to aim without clawing, I’m sorry, but you’re wrong.” I thought the switch was going to be really tough, but after a couple days to a week it was second-nature. Getting that jump to one of the bumpers is very helpful. If you use claw grip, of course, that’s irrelevant.
I use bumper jumper because it allows me to be able to aim while shooting, jumping, and punching. Also it’s what I’ve used since Halo 3 so in my opinion it’s not worth me trying to learn new controls
Recon is pretty reliable in my experience, and it emulates the older control schemes very well. My only gripe is when you’re using a Ground Pound, you’ll have to move your left thumb over to the right thumbstick to aim.
I have been a huge fan of bumper jumper since H3 (trigger bumper combo is just so quick for a body snipe melee kill if I was caught close quarters, it even allowed me to win sniper vs shotty battles in a lot of cases) I played bumper jumper on H5 until about a month ago then I switched to Helljumper. I felt the melee function on right thumbstick click was just too clumbsy for H5 gameplay, so I set up a profile in my elite controller that remaps the thumbstick click to right bumper and right bumper to right thumbstick click. In essence, I have bumper jumper with ADS scoping on left trigger, and grenade throw on right thumbstick click. I really, really like having grenade throw on RTSC, it feels so natural. The only downside is in a super sweaty gunfight, I have the propensity to accidentally click down on RTS and go into the grenade throwing animation, 90% of the time, I end up dying when this happens, about 30% of the time I get a surprise “from the grave” medal because the grenade kills my apponent. It’s happening with less frequency as muscle memory adapts though, so I am keeping it because ADS is awesome.
I use halo 4 settings though I button map B to left bumper so I can crouch walk at the same time
i only use it because I got so used to this and have struggled to change to hellhunper so I just went back
I use Bumper Jumper because I can crouch-strafe, jump, aim, and shoot all at the same time. I would use Helljumper, but since I play MCC often, I don’t think it’s worth learning it.
Use to go Halo 4 controls due to being so use to the default controls for Reach and 4. Later when I got my Elite and testing things out I found default better due to the aiming feels better on left trigger then right stick. The other games never affected me on the aiming other then Halo 5. I later made myself go use default controls for than previous Halo games and Reach with Recon.

Man how do you make the transition!? I still use bumper jumper. You’ve explained exactly how I feel but man having a nade on RT…I think when i briefly played destiny the hunter class had a throwing knife tied to the melee button which in the layout I used was RT. Aiming the knife sometimes felt awkward. I feel like throwing a nade might make me feel really awkward and I’ll have so many nade fails as if i don’t already lol.
But that being said the 1 downfall of bumper jumper (i use an elite controller and thrusters ser to the lower right paddle) when you use CQC weapons in h5 scoping in with scattershot or shottie feels nasty in the heat of battle. At range RT as smart link(scope in) feels fine. Close range feels bad and the weapons hip fire range always has you second guessing and missing a kill.
Your post got me curious to try your layout though man…like…dude the elite has 4 paddles but I simply cannot use more than that 1 paddle without fumbling all over the place. I’m constantly telling myself “bumper jumper fo life!” Cause aside from that the layout feels amazing.

I don’t use any of the paddles, I don’t even have them installed. Grenade throw on the right stick just feels right to me.
