If there’s something important in a FPS, it has to be the ease of using the controls.
In Halo, we do get to customize our controller schemes out of premade options – which is unfortunate, but better than nothing – however in Halo 4, with sprint being always available and not an AA anymore, it needed an extra button, which the controller didn’t have.
This led to massive controller schemes rehauls, and most of the older ones are gone or changed now.
So I thought it’d be a great idea to list potential controller layouts that are popular for 343 to add once the game comes out.
Here’s default in Halo 4:
“Default”
RT – Fire
LT – Throw Grenade
RB – Melee
X – Action / Reload
A – Jump
LS – Sprint
LB – AA
Y – Switch Weapons
D-pad – Switch Grenades
B – Crouch
RS – Zoom
Now here are the requested ones.
Starting with the most requested one for Halo 4, inspired from Halo: Reach’s Bumper Jumper:
“Classic Jumper”
RT – Fire
LT – Throw Grenade
RB – Melee
B – Action / Reload
LB – Jump
A – Sprint
X – AA
Y – Switch Weapons
D-pad – Switch Grenades
LS – Crouch
RS – Zoom
“Classic”
RT – Fire
LT – Throw Grenade
B – Melee
X – Action / Reload
A – Jump
RB – Sprint
LB – AA
Y – Switch Weapons
D-pad – Switch Grenades
LS – Crouch
RS – Zoom
“Recon”
RT – Fire
LT – Throw Grenade
B – Melee
X – Sprint
A – Jump
D-pad – Switch Grenades
LB – AA
Y – Switch Weapons
RB – Action / Reload
LS – Crouch
RS – Zoom
Right Trigger – Fire
Left Trigger – Throw Grenade
B Button – Melee
Right Bumper – Action / Reload
A Button – Jump
X Button – Sprint
Left Bumper – AA
Y Button – Switch Weapons
D Pad – Switch Grenades
Left Sitck – Crouch
Right Stick – Zoom
RT – Fire
LT – Throw Grenade
B – Melee
X – Action / Reload
A – Jump
D-pad – Change grenade
LB – AA
Y – Switch Weapons
RB – Sprint
LS – Crouch
RS – Zoom
It’s just too perfect that we basically have two AAs and we’ve got two bumpers that were never used in Halo 1 or 2 so we can keep the same layout as they had and just put the AAs on the bumpers.
However, I’m the kind of person that wants to be able to switch between Halo 3, ODST, and Reach with ease so Recon is what I’ll be using which is setup the following way:
“Recon”
RT – Fire
LT – Throw Grenade
B – Melee
X – Sprint
A – Jump
D-pad – Change grenade
LB – AA
Y – Switch Weapons
RB – Action / Reload
LS – Crouch
RS – Zoom

Agreed about the Classic one. I’ll change it, and I think I’ll add Recon as well, as I’m seeing it a lot.

If it’s RB to Reload/Action then it’s essentially Recon which is how your’s is set up.

Aw man, now I gotta think of a really unique one:
“NOOBAZOOKA”
X – Fire
B – Throw Grenade
RT – Melee
LS – Action / Reload
LT – Jump
D-PAD (LEFT) – Sprint
RB – AA
LB – Switch Weapons
RS – Switch Grenades
A – Crouch
A – Zoom
RT – Shoot
LT – Throw Grenade
RS – Melee
X – Action / Reload
A – Jump
B – Sprint
LB – AA
Y – Switch Weapons
D pad – Switch Grenades
LS – Crouch
RB – Zoom
This probably won’t be very popular but I’m used to green thumb and I don’t use toggle crouch so B for crouch is kind of impossible.
RT - Fire
LT - Throw Grenade
RB - Action/Reload
LB - Sprint
Y - Switch Weapons
X - Secondary Armour Ability
A - Jump
B - Melee
Up on D-Pad - Switch grenades
Left, Right and Down on D-Pad - Select Ordinance
Left Stick - Crouch
Right Stick - Zoom
RT – Fire
RB – Throw Grenade
X – Melee
B – Action / Reload
LB – Jump
A – Sprint
LT – AA
Y – Switch Weapons
D-Pad – Switch Grenades
LS – Crouch
RS – Zoom
I would use this with default sticks, and it’s designed around the Jetpack. I’d like Sprint and Melee on the bumpers and/or triggers, but you can’t have everything so I put them next to Right Stick.
Of course if Armour Abilities turn out to be useable on the face buttons this scheme is pretty redundant and ‘Classic Jumper’ would be a better option.
