Playing on the controller, there’s a limited amount of buttons ready at your finger tips.
I have set my inputs to Recon but with the left stick being sprint, since it’s still rather essential, rushing to weapons, running around with the hammer, etc. It’d be insane to give up a 2-3% speed boost with no downsides. People want to take advantage and exploit every mechanic a game gives them.
However, I’ve noticed that this game favors you swapping around grenades more tactfully, to get situational benefits, like the focus on the Gravity Hammer launch, throwing a spike grenade in a small room, throwing out frags while you have encounters, or swapping to one of your grenade types to exchange them with a different type on the map. I’d like to be able to swap my grenades on the fly as well.
Currently grenade swap is put on d-pad left. I know I can change this, that’s not the issue, the issue I find is that I can’t justify swapping around controls since there’s already so many essential controls already bound to my bumpers, triggers, sticks and face buttons.
My observation is that since sprint is pretty much the least useful mechanic in the game, I think people, including myself, could benefit from one less button being taken up by a near useless mechanic, allowing me to bind crouch to left stick and grenades to X. So I personally think that this game would be better without sprint.
Sprint may be the gateway to sliding, I hear, but it doesn’t have to be, the developers could theoretically bind slide to activate when you move forwards and are at your max movement speed. Classic Halo games didn’t even allow you to crouch when moving at max speed. This could also bring back the motion tracker detecting people that walk. and most importantly, I could swap grenades mid encounters way more easily to fit the situation.
What do you all think? I doubt that they’ll ever remove it, I just personally believe it would still be better, at least for controller players, if it weren’t there taking up a button.

It’s just going to be another skill gap I suppose. Those who know their way around the controller more than someone else. You can completely customise your controller setting though to whatever you want so the freedom is there for you to choose what you wish.

I agree. Sprint should be booted, it’s dead weight at this point. Also, it messes with the golden triangle being available at all times like the proper halo games(H1,H2,H3,ODST, and Reach)
Is this particularly a halo infinite problem? The most milisecond-critical moment where button mappings make the most difference is when you’re in the middle of trading fire with an enemy. In this case, it’s ideal to be able to jump, melee, and throw grenades while your thumbs are busy with movement and staying on target. This is why so many people swear by bumper jumper. I think you should move sprint to a face button since you’re not going to worry about aiming the moment you begin sprinting.

From what I played in the Test Flight, I’ve found myself thinking of wanting to swap grenades during encounters way more often than I would have wanted to in previous games. In other Halo games I usually just run around with non-frag grenades set to active in case of sticking a player I encounter. With the idea of replacing a grenade type, I find that actively making grenade choices to for example launch a specific weapon towards me, which can only be done with a plasma grenade, are encouraged.

What button do you suggest me putting on d-pad left then? I can only think of crouch and sprint but neither sound like something I’d want to have so inaccessible.

Do you want to stay on target when crouching under a sniper bullet or do you want to save a couple frames of preemptively aiming at a doorway when swapping to spike grenades before an indoor encounter? I personally think the former is slightly more important, but if what you say about the new grenades is true, then bind left stick to grenade swap and d-pad left to crouch.

That’d mean I would either be unable to move while crouching or aim while crouching and I wouldn’t be able to crouch jump as easily, I find that a rather big down side, when the obvious choice to me still feels like getting rid of a feature that’s intentionally designed to not be significant.
