One thing I’ve always disliked about Halo (and many other games) is the lack of complete controller configuration. If there are any options for controller configurations, there isn’t any reason I know of to not just make the controller completely customizable. The need to allow players to select option and pair with button seems rather simple and not much more work than to make the menu showing the different configs.
Even the little pictures for which button to press during tutorials isn’t an obstacle at all (each action happens when VariableX input is recieved, and the settings file will pair a button with VariableX, so base the picture select of that pairing as well.).
In any case, I get really irritated with some of the configs, and I can’t find one that is really comfortable. Of course, I’d try to leave the right joystick button open as I hate trying to move quickly only to crouch instead.
Something that might be more difficult to include is putting jetpack on the jump button, so double tapping, tapping/holding in the air, or holding jump uses the jetpack. I use bumper jumper config, but I hate losing control because I have to take my thumb off the stick to hold the equipment button for the entire duration of jet packing.
So what about you guys, anyone else want custom configs?
Halo provides enough options that I don’t see a reason to need custom configs. I’m just saying I’ve never needed them. I would just build it to bumper jumper, which I can just select lol.
o.o wow, I never heard of it before. Thanks for pointing it out. Sounds awesome.
0.0 150$ ! Well, maybe someone on the forums will buy it for me. I certainly can’t afford it. I’ll be lucky just get the basic game, the controller is ridiculously expensive. (everything is heading that way, except my paycheck.)
I don’t think the controller will affect the game showing a picture for what button will do something though, which is a minor inconvenience. Everything else about it seems awesome though.
I agree with OP, custom layouts make a much better solution than several button configs as options. In the beta, I thought RB for grenades and LT for thruster was weird for recon. I could barely get used to it. I would’ve preferred to switch the two around.

How is that a good solution? For starters, that’s shelling out $150 just for a few button changes, and more importantly, it would be annoying as hell to change default button layouts to compensate for a single game that affects all games (if the controller’s settings are universal.)

It’s a great solution for those who are willing to pay the price. I never said it was a cheap solution. I also think that you should be aware that the controller allows for you to have pre-set control preferences that can be changed on the fly just by toggling a switch on the controller. For $150 the hardware is a good value compared to similar controllers on the market. I am by no means a pro gamer but I still look forward to the controller and the flexibility it will provide.
It’d be cool but I wouldn’t say totally necessary. Almost everyone uses the same configurations and it probably wouldn’t be worth the extra time and effort.
I would like full control customization, but at least if 343 has no time for that, they must give us the option to choose ground pound between crouch or melee, I would definrtly go for crouch as it was in the beta, we have clamber, so I don’t need crouch jumps.
I’ve played on Bumper Jumper button layout since H3 but I’m really worried about the layout for Halo 5…
When I played the beta I couldn’t play on Bumper Jumper at all, it felt way too difficult with the “smart link” zoom on the left trigger. You can’t jump(LB) & stay zoomed in(LT). Before you’d use one hand to control jumping and the other hand to zoom in.
I voiced my concerns in the community feedback survey they sent out after the beta but didn’t know if anyone else that plays bumper jumper felt this way?..

Hmm… I don’t remember zoom being on the left trigger for bumper-jumper. I played H5’s beta for a few hours, and I’m certain I used bumper-jumper…but I don’t remember pulling LT for zoom. Hopefully someone who played the beta more can help clear this up for us??

SS was on RS for bumper jumper. I can personally verify that. Jump to 1:30. I can’t start the video there because I’m on mobile.
My biggest and main issue in the beta was the controls. They have crammed a lot of things onto the controller now and are trying to give everything its own button in cases where it’s unnecessary. They said they improved the control schemes, and Ground Pound is now linked with melee instead of crouch (thank God), so that will be an improvement.
But…
You’re right. Bethesda has allowed for just virtually completely customizable control schemes in their games for years. Fallout and Skyrim allow a player to choose what each button does, and even to go in 1st person or 3rd person at any time, and choose the distance of the 3rd person camera. It shows that such options are possible, and can be done just fine even on cruddy old-school game engines. So I see no reason in default controller configurations as opposed to letting us choose the buttons we like for the functions that suit our play-style best. Put the controller in the hands of the player, let them experiment.
