With the advent of new technology and advances in all things game related, graphics, engine, physics, etc… It would seem silly something so easily manipulated would still utilize such an old template.
A few newer games have used a scheme in which the player can setup ALL button to their liking on their controller, in turn making game play much more comfortable and familiar.
Here in lies the problem of the Halo series, even since it’s first inception the player has had to stick and grow used to the controller layouts given to them. I think it is time we move away from this old method and allow people to customize their controller to their choosing instead of having presets.
In my and possibly other peoples examples; I play southpaw, as if my stick preference was not unique enough most if not all the button layouts are extremely uncomfortable and I find myself hitting the wrong button or the reach to the designated button removes my ability to shoot, jump, etc. thus decreasing my effectiveness.
343 please update the controller button layout options for FULL CUSTOMIZATION.
If you agree and would welcome this change please post/reply, 343 as well as all game developers NEED to start incorporating this into their games.
YES!!! I would love that! Here’s my dream layout with Halo 4 settings:
AAs-A
Action/Reload-B
Swap Weapon-Y
Sprint-X
Jump-LB
Melee-RB
Grenade-LT
Shoot-RT
Crouch-LS
Zoom-RS
Switch Grenades-D Pad
I know it only swaps Sprint and AAs for Bumper Jumper but I think it’d be a bit easier for Jetpacking.
ABOUT TIME THEY TOOK THIS INTO CONSIDERATION. I´m hoping this will be in the next Halo; we´ve asked for this for Halo 4 but apparently it´s too complicated for them to implement… Give me a break.
Having an armor ability button sort of makes it tough to choose your setup. I mean, compare the Jetpack and the Autosentry… The former requires you to hold down for the sake of movement (same way as the sprint armor ability in Reach), and the latter is just a hit-it-once-and-you’re-done kind of AA.
Having a jump button be A in a first person shooter makes less sense than in, for instance, Devil May Cry, or any platformer in general.
this same topic has been brought up in every halo game since the first one. I don’t know why they don’t implement it other then the fact that they don’t want too. I don’t know if we’ve ever been given a straight answer by anyone working there. it’s up to the developer but any game with confidence allows you too change your buttons how you want too.
I agree with this. I hate having only one button combination for Southpaw. It would be nice if they could at least have something like a Southpaw bumper jumper for some one like me.

What? Do you work at a GameStop or something? Stop trying to get me to buy peripherals! lol
I’d like more options simply because it seems that most consoles have fallen back in this regard in comparison to PC games (I want to say ALL of which have this functionality). Heck, I think it’s far beyond time that HUDs should be completely customizable!
Great topic, and one that has bugged me for a while.
I use the FISHSTICK setup, and the only change I’d like is to move Armor Ability from the LB to A, and have Jump move from A to LB
Surely this is something that can be patched or allowed for because right now, with every setup option that Halo 4 has, there is always some compromise to the ideal layout
