Ideally, we would like to customize controls down to the button, but for the sake of this thread, think about how you’d like Halo and the Xbox controller to co-exist.
Remember, sprint is native to gameplay so unlike Halo Reach, it will need it’s own button.
Keep in mind how Halo CE, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo Reach had their default control schemes (example being how Halo 3’s layout changed to reach (ie bumpers were weapon pick ups in Halo 3))
Buttons on a controller include–
Left Stick
Right Stick
Left Click
Right Click
D-UP
D-Down
D-Right
D-Left
LB
RB
LT
RT
X
Y
A
B
Back
Start
Create a default control layout. Let’s all agree on something.
esentially, you could base it off halo Reach’s control scheme-
Lt-grenade
Rt-shoot
Lb-sprint or AA
Rb-sprint or AA
Y-weapon switch
X-reload
B-mele (like halo 3)
A-jump
Right click-crowch
Left click-zoom
Down on D-pad-switch grenades
could work, but id miss having a bumper for mele
I posted something like this earlier today in another thread and there was general agreement over it as a good default layout.
LS - movement
RS - aiming
LC - crouch
RC - zoom/scope
LB - sprint
RB - use AA
LT - throw grenade
RT - fire weapon
X - reload
Y - switch weapon
A - jump
B - melee
Up - Flashlight/vision
Down - grenade type 1
Left - grenade type 2
Right - grenade type 3
Back - score
Start - pause
Basically, the fact that we have 2 abilities now (albeit 1 is sprint) means that they will take up both bumpers and force melee to move back to it’s original location at B. Now we can take advantage of the D-pad and place all 3 grenade types as well as the night vision/flashlight/whatever vision mode comes along.
To both of you above me, do you think the D-pad would be best for grenade change? I mean if you move your thumb from the left stick (movement), or if you want to move your right thumb from the right stick (aim), is keeping either thumb off the sticks worth it to change grenades during a fight?

The real problem is what else would go there? Just isn’t enough buttons on the controller. Having a specific grenade mapped to each button would alleviate that a bit instead of having to push that button multiple times while having your thumb off one of the sticks longer.

You’d be on to something except there’s no grenade switching. That seems to be the tricky part without having to remove your thumbs from the sticks.
Ok, after reviewing the MLG beta footage, I found the default control scheme. (Yes, I am aware that 343 can change this, but at least we get a basic idea, right?)
LT - Throw Grenade
RT - Fire Weapon
LB - Use Armor Ability
RB - Melee
Back - Scoreboard
Start - Settings/Pause
LS - Movement/Sprint
RS - Look/Zoom
X - Action/Reload
Y - Switch Weapons
B - Crouch
A - Jump
D-pad Left/Right - Switch Grenades
Also shown were Bumper Jumper, Southpaw, Green Thumb, Boxer, and Recon.
I would use Halo 4’s ‘Recon’ control scheme. The only thing I would change is - I would swap the AA button (lb) with the sprint button (x). I might make up on the d-pad to change grenades but they’re the only changes I’d make to it. Then it’d be perfect.
