I am a Halo veteran that has recently found time to get back into the games, however I find all of the control schemes in the game highly limiting and uncomfortable.
I like the Recon control scheme the most but it has a big disadvantage: Zoom/Smart Link is on the Right Analogue [Press] instead of being on the Left Trigger [Hold], which makes it more tedious to aim down sight when you are being attacked.
I would like to suggest an additional control scheme that keeps Smart Link on the Left Trigger, places Melee on the B button as it traditionally has been, places Reload on the Right Bumper as it traditionally has been, and places Thruster on the X button to keep it highly accessible whilst you are firing your weapon. I would call this new scheme “Modern Recon” as it has similarities to the existing Recon scheme but alleviates the disadvantages I have outlined.
I have detailed the entire control scheme below using the Default control scheme as a template. Changes I have made for “Modern Recon” are in bold.
- A - Jump & Clamber - B - Melee: It’s slow to move my finger from Right Trigger to Right Bumper to Melee after firing. Melee on B solves this. - X - Thruster: I need to be able to do this whilst shooting, so it should not be on the Right Bumper. - Y - Change Weapon
- Left Analog - Movement (Hold to Sprint) - Right Analog - Look (Click to Crouch)
- Left Trigger - Smart-Link - Left Bumper - Throw Grenade
-
Right Bumper - Action & Reload: Reloading is the best action for RB because I only reload when I’m safe. - Right Trigger - Fire WeaponI hope this is something that 343i will add to the game as it would hugely improve the playing experience for many of us, particularly returning veterans.
This would be a new scheme and would not replace the current Recon scheme.
(Note: I’ve hit my stupid 5 post daily limit so I can’t reply to feedback today, but I’ll keep editing this post to address concerns.)
I dunno about that. Sometimes I wish it has a button mapping option.

I would definitely love an option to button map the entire scheme inside of Halo 5, but that would take 343i a lot longer to develop.
This control scheme would take significantly less development time to implement.
As long as it doesn’t change the actual Recon layout, then sure. But if it does… well, there will be MASSIVE backlash.
I don’t like zoom on the trigger personally.
edit - that’s one of the reasons why I use Recon.
I think zooming with the stick is better. You just click it and it stays zoomed, unlike having to hold the trigger down
Recon feels the most natural when it comes to emulating the OG Halo controls. But if wanted to configure your own controls (like the aforementioned Modern Recon), there should be an option to map out your buttons freely.
These are the 2 that I would request. I called this load out Thumbperjumper. Both are good for close range but in different ways.
1st has melee on LB, grenade on RB, thrust on LS, jump on RS, sprint on A, crouch on B, every thing else on default. (Better assault rifle/melee kills, quicker grenade, quick thrust, turning and jumping). I’m still getting used to this new one but I’ve seen an increase in surviving assault/gun+melee duals.
2nd has melee on RB, grenade on B, crouch on LB, every thing else same as above. (Good for easy power sliding, crouch strafing, crouch clamber, and easy access for holding crouch down instead of having toggle crouch). It was pretty good for sword multikills. I originally put grenade and sprint on A and B to cut down over use.

You put “RB TO RELOAD” in bold…rb is already Reload on Recon

I personally think tapping the left analog stick whilst moving in a certain direction (mainly forward) should start the sprint. There are times where you might have to run away from fights, and holding it down can be quite tedious.
At the very least, there should be an option to toggle it, similar to the crouch button’s toggle option. I can understand why someone might prefer to hold down the left stick to sprint, as some other games have this type of feature for faster movement…
Gotta say that’s a decent sounding setup there.
I too dislike the click to zoom in H5 as it’s not fast enough.

Hi! This is already the case.
If you hold the Left Analogue Stick down you will sprint, but tapping it once will also activate a sprint.

Hey. I started with the Default control scheme as my template, not the Recon scheme. I’ve edited the opening post to clarify this. I simply named the scheme “Modern Recon” because of its similarities, whilst solving a few of the issues that the original Recon scheme presents.
I hope everyone can appreciate the control scheme I’ve suggested and how it will alleviate problems for veterans returning to the game; as the current Recon scheme, whilst a nice throwback, I don’t feel is very practical for the aforementioned reasons when compared to the scheme I’m suggesting.
I agree with everyone who would like the ability to fully map their scheme, but honestly I don’t think 343i would do this so late into the game as they’d need to write a new gameplay system for it. Whereas a new controller scheme which just switches around a few buttons is very simple to do.

Ok sorry

I think the controls started going downhill in Halo 4.
When I was playing Halo 4 I always used the Recon scheme - not the Default Halo 4 scheme. The Recon scheme was great in Halo 4, but in Halo 5 the Recon scheme is disadvantaged because it doesn’t have the convenience of Smart Link being on the Left trigger.
Ever since Melee was moved to the Bumper instead of being on the B button it became problematic. We need to be able to Melee immediately after Firing; we cannot do this if we have to move our finger from the Fire button (Right Trigger) down to the Melee button (Right Bumper.)
This is why I’d like a new Modern Recon control scheme which keeps Melee on B and Thruster on X - because then they’re immediately usable whilst shooting without having to take your finger off of the trigger. Keeping Smart Link on Left Trigger is much more practical than it being on the joystick press as the joystick presses are a little bit temperamental - they also wear faster on old controllers.

Yeah, i use recon for that exact reason. Also, this way you can move and scope at the same time, increasing accuracy as you move.

Yeah it would make sense why “b” isn’t melee

You can also move/scope at the same time whilst holding the trigger.
See, personally I found the scope being on the Analogue stick was great in previous games, because you used your scope a lot less often.
But now that all weapons have a ‘scope’ then you use it a lot, which makes pressing the analogue stick tedious. Plus, in older controllers, analogue sticks seem to wear/fail more often than the trigger. (My analogue sticks always wore out before triggers on past controllers). I’ve also found that the trigger is faster to zoom back in with.
But in Halo 5 where your scope is used constantly, I’ve found that holding the trigger is much more responsive and far less annoying than pressing the analogue button.

I’m not following here…
Do you mean it would make sense why B is be Melee in the scheme I’m suggesting?

You could see it that way, but I think using the joystick (I still call it that) is better for me cuz again, you can move and aim with one button. Also, i’ve found that using LT as a zoom “locks” my grip on the controller, making it harder for me to switch buttons. As for the wear and tear, I know that people have that problem, but I haven’t so it’s fine for me.
