Control Groups

Being an old RTS PC gamer getting used to the less-than-perfect Halo Wars 1 control groups was a bit of challenge - cycling through is just not ideal. I’m wondering how they are handling control groups in HW2?

Suggestion:
If they don’t have a good system for it already I suggest they use the same concept as weapon wheels. Press ‘Y’ (or which ever button) and it brings up a wheel where you can assign/select/reassign control groups.

There are legit control groups in Halo Wars 2 now and not the simple same-unit groupings as before. You can select a hodge-podge of units and place them under control groupings just like normal PC RTS.

It’s been a little while, but I believe they were assigned by holding a button (possibly left bumper?) and then pressing and holding a direction on the D-pad. The catch is that I think it was limited to 4 groupings (D-pad restrictiveness). The same button combo, but with a tap rather than holding, brings the group under your control.

Like I said, It’s been a while since I played the beta, so while I know for sure there are control groups and they are limited to 4 groups because of the D-pad, I can’t quite remember the correct process for setting them.

4 groups on the D pad is good too. Either a weapon wheel style (like Far Cry 4 for example) or D pad. Just so long as there are hard control groups.

I would really love for them to include functionality for the chatpad, such as hotkeying and control groupings.

If I recall correctly, part of the reason ES ignored doing so was to avoid giving an advantage to players with a chatpad over those who didn’t, but clearly with MS’s introduction of an Elite gamepad, this philosophy should’ve been thrown out the window.

I know it wasn’t 100% ideal but it wasn’t broken as well. It comes down to how good of a player you are at this point. As in if you aren’t you just wouldn’t be able to use the system optimally. Like, I have no trouble with it at all.

I don’t see why so many people complain about controls when I haven’t had trouble with them. It’s the units themselves- like more than three scorpions going through a squeeze takes how ever many hours there are scorpions. Should make units temporarily ghost each other or something.

While not broken, it was not the most ideal system. So regardless of whether or not you have/had trouble with it, it was not the best possible system.

Ensemble did a hell of a job in making RTS controls that worked so fluidly on console when everything before was more-or-less a clunky PC port. That being said, there is room for improvement in the way controls are implemented and that’s why I’m glad the CA is experimenting with new control styles.

While they certainly aren’t perfect yet, and might even be a step backwards here and there, with review and feedback they can be streamlined, adjusted, or cut completely as necessary.

The beta gave me reason to believe that CA is capable of making a solid Halo Wars entry.

Good. Yeah I wish I played the beta. I just had no idea it was out. No advertising/word of mouth @ all

lol what? It was plastered all over these forums, as well as on the Microsoft Halo Wars 2 page, plus was a major highlight coming out of the Microsoft conference at E3.

It was plugged by most of the major gaming sites…

  1. Wasn’t here then.

  2. Don’t know where that is.

  3. Didn’t watch E-3. Am too depressed at the industry right now.

  4. Don’t look, same reason as before.

might be my fault for missing it but damn. Could have just had a commercial. Would have probably seen it then

A TV commercial for a week-long early beta? A beta that is at least 9 months from the final release? Seems like overkill for just a beta. Keep in mind that this wasn’t a typical hype “beta” that is opened near the release date.

But no worries. There will be a second beta before release for both Xbone and PC. Stick around and you’ll find out when it drops.
