contrast and color tweaks fix the infinite demo

I found this youtube video. this guy “halo hunter” applied some s-curve, contrast, saturation and hue changes to the demo video. the result looks suprisingly stunning (although i think he overdid the saturation). these are extremly simple fixes, literaly no cost post processing. I hope 343 applies simmilar changes for an optimal result, as the infinite reveal looked bland.

It will take a lot more than that to fix the demo

indeed. but it reduces the plastic effect, improves the visibility of details and creates a more coherent visual experience. its a small step, but has a lot of effect. this means the graphics can be salvaged and infinite is not yet lost. this makes me happy.

The thread title is this imprecise due to the character limit.

If anything, I’d say this filter makes the demo look even more cartoony, which I don’t personally mind, but is a criticism I’ve seen a lot.

This definitely does look loads better. I think the more detailed textures of the shorter trailer released yesterday plus this would be very very nice.

the guy overdid it with the color saturation. but the contrast realy brings out the details and the hsl makes it look more connected. the filter makes it look cartoony, but less cheap.

I’d like to see a similar filter with less saturation applied. Maybe that could be something.

indeed. less saturation, a slightly less blueish tint and the plastic department is fixed. dynamic tone ambient light, ssao, bumpmapping, a slight vignettte and ssr would fix the other lighting issues ( that are common with real time lighting). The LOD issues need technical fixes. The plasma effects and some model/ textures/materials need replacement. some animation should be added to watter, gras, leaves and enemy faces.

halo hunter uploaded a non- skewed version of the modified trailer ( with a reduced blue tint)

Halo Infinite Gameplay Demo Touch Up

I do like that

Improving the textures and decals like the following amage would work wonders too:

I think increasing the saturation on some of the ground and grass textures here help bring out differences, but other than that I think it’s just oversaturated and the contrast has been overdone to the point that all bright and dark parts of the picture lose detail.

it is indeed a bit overdone. the blackout and whiteout of some parts are not necessarily bad 8although it happens here a bit often), as it often happens under real lighting conditions. halo 3 had a lot of white and blackout shading too. the modification is clearly not perfect, but i think the general direction of more contrast on the visuals is benefitial.

Was about to say the same thing. Contrast and color saturation look like they were cranked up like crazy. Looks like an improvement in some situations but man that sky is blinding.

the sky is blinding sometimes, but the pelican interior, nature and banished camp sections look better. this means 343 could easily do better.

Personally, I think people are underestimating just how much the extremely cartoony particle effects are degrading the overall visual experience. Plasma Grenades, fire and smoke effects, plasma weapon effects, and shield flairs all clash with the rest of the visuals. The Phantom, Plasma Batteries, and Fusion Coil models and texturing are a cartoon mess as well. The Grunts almost look cel shaded. Brute and Elite armour should look a bit more metalic/reflective, like they are made of exotic fictional metals, to help them look different from the metals the UNSC use.

Parts of the demo look like they’re modded in from a completely different game with a different artstyle, which is a real shame, because 343 seems to have finally gotten Halo’s natural scenery down almost perfectly.

i desperately hope these are placeholders/ not finaly textured.

The post-release raytracing update for Series X and PC will help if done well, but the particle effects in particular make me believe 343 didn’t really know what it was doing from an artistic standpoint. Too many assets clash with each other, and what we were shown in 2018 and 2019. Luckily, these things can be changed with relative ease, but only if 343 gets to work on making a cohesive art style that’s less exaggerated, ASAP.
