Contextual Spartan Abilities?

Alright, so unless ive missed something like a tweet or post or some kind of media release that denies what im suggesting, heres my crazy thought.

As we know, Armour Abilities are out. Instead we get base traits/abilities known so far as ‘Spartan Abilities’.

Now, while i honestly do not like basing theories off of a CGI trailer, i thought that i would post this and see what people would think.

So with AAs gone, that frees up a button. X, LB, whatever. But if we base the “Spartan Slam” (heh), the weird dive tackle thingy (possible assassination so im disregarding this) and the slide from the trailer as the Spartan Abilities we have 2 different actions mapped to one button.

Now what im floating around is the contextual use of these abilities.

So say if youre airbourne and use the ability button, BAM!, Spartan Slam.

Maybe if youre sprinting, press that button and you slide.

If you want to throw that tackle back smack in there, maybe its contextual to sprinting and then meleeing. Although that gives a whole new meaning to annoying sprint beatdowners.

Anywho, what’s your take on this theory/idea? Does a contextual button fit into Halo gameplay?

So essentially button combinations…

Disclaimer: RECON CONTROLLER SCHEME

Cover Slide = Movement (‘Left Analog Stick’) + Direction (‘Right Analog Stick’)
+ Crouch (‘Left Analog Click’) + Sprint (‘X’).

Spear Tackle = Movement (‘Left Analog Stick’) + Direction (‘Right Analog Stick’) + Sprint (‘X’) + Melee (‘B’).

Ground Pound = Jump (‘A’) + Melee (‘B’) + Melee (‘B’).

Not the first time something like this has been suggested:

And I still agree with it that if we get a ton of new abilities, the most intuitive and user friendly way to implement them with the lack of buttons that we have is to make them into what are essentially button combinations. The only matter of dispute is which combinations are the fastest, the most intuitive, and interfere the least with other actions.

I think the ground pound is one of the silliest things. The trailer makes it looks so dumb IMO. Master Chief isn’t Mario where he floats into the air and just defies gravity by suddenly accelerating toward the ground…

The problem about having a button tied to different actions is that you might not perform what you want to perform. This happens in games all the time and it’s exceedingly frustrating to go into cover or slide when that’s NOT what you, the player, were trying to perform.

I was thinking this same thing but I had no idea how to phrase it. I would prefer is this is how new things were implemented as you could still predict when a player was going to use one. If I see someone sprinting, I know theres a chance they may slide to cover or if I see them jumping off a high platform, I know they may use that ground pound.

I think thats a pretty good way to map things out.

So button combos? Your idea would remind me of Destiny’s slide and crouch options. All mapped to one button but does different things depend on what actions you’re performing. I like that idea more than the old AAs.

No but hes a spartan a badass super soldier that can do all that sh…t and more crazy sh…t
