EDIT 21/07/2020: It seems this isn’t a complete solution as I had the issue come back out of nowhere after a few days of successfully joining matchmaking, accessing seasons/challenges and custom games, seemingly out of nowhere. Playing around with reboots/signing in-out of the Xbox Live profile and waiting long periods can lead to functionality, at least in my case.
EDIT: A solution for Win7 players has been found: Install Windows 7 SP1, then install this:
A number of players including myself were able to resolve this issue by installing SP2.
Whenever I try to play matchmaking as of the Halo 3 launch I get the prompt “Contacting server to get the latest matchmaking data”.
This prompt never disappears naturally, and prevents any matchmaking modes from working.
I have tried:
Turning relays on then off
Changing the networking mode between LAN, then back to Xbox Live
Using a VPN - (Game then claims I’m not signed into Xbox Live and cannot be rectified while the VPN is enabled)
Rebooting the game
Rebooting my computer
Verifying the integrity of the game cache
EDIT:–15/07/2020–
Signing in/out of Xbox Live profile
Launching and quitting a campaign mission twice, then attempting matchmaking
Reinstalling the game from scratch
Using an IPv6 compatible VPN - Allows the user to reach matchmaking mode menus without a “not signed into Xbox Live” prompt, but will still initiate the “Contacting server to get the latest matchmaking data” prompt when attempting to search for sessions.
EDIT:–21/07/2020–
On Win 7, installing SP1 then SP2. This temporarily worked for me until today where the game decided magically that it wants to show this prompt again and not work. There is seemingly no clear reason for the game not working again.
I have previously never experienced this issue with matchmaking until the release of Halo 3.
I have the exact same issue, played Reach when it first came out on PC and everything was fine. Now I downloaded Halo 3 and no matter what I do I get “contacting servers to get the latest matchmaking data”. I have also tried all of the fixes you have mentioned.
I’m experiencing this too. Here is a list of the following fixes that haven’t worked.
•Turning relays on then off
•Changing the networking mode between LAN, then back to Xbox Live
•Rebooting the game
•Rebooting my computer
•Verifying the integrity of the game cache
•Changing DNS
•Clearing APP Data
•Launching the Game without Steam
•Launching Steam/ MCC in Administrator mode
•Signing in and out of profile
•Signing in with another profile then in with the original
•Starting a Campaign, then leaving it

Also having this issue and have tried everything he has tried as well.
A lot of people seem to be having this issue. I noticed that my Season 2 battle pass will not load in the options menu, so I suspect this may have something to do with the new season pass.
I’ve opened a support ticket and cannot seem to get any response for a fix or workaround for this. I’ll be refunding if I don’t receive some support soon.

Done that, no success sadly. Reinstalling the game and attempting a connection with an IPv6 compatible VPN to see if that allows the issue to be bypassed.

They are notoriously bad at responding to tickets.
An IPv6 compatible VPN will allow you to enter the menus for matchmaking modes, but unfortunately even with an Xbox Live compatible VPN, the “Contacting server to get the latest matchmaking data”. prompt still appears the same way it would with my ordinary connection.

Exact same issue. The challenge hub works for me, but never the season menu, its stuck greyed out on “retrieving” no matter what I do.
I reinstalled the game and it magically fixed itself and kept playing. When I closed the game and later reopened it I got the same issues. No season rank UI on the bottom right, can’t matchmake without taking 15 minutes of my time waiting at the prompt, and can’t even see my friends in the friend’s list/can’t join them either without a connection lost. This update broke my game and I can’t enjoy it the way I want to play.
Already submitted a ticket. Been 16 hours and no response. Guess I will wait another day.
Hello everyone… Just passing by to inform that I’m having the same problem since I downloaded and installed Halo 3. And I have tried almost everything and still can’t play online Can someone please link me how to send a ticket about my problem to the company?
The most info I could get about it after reading around online about the problem for 48 hours now.
“Brian Jarrard @ske7ch
Hm sorry to hear, I’m not aware of any issues like that. please visit http://support.halowaypoint.com and file a ticket to help our teams look into this issue.”
Lots of people are experiencing this problem, no one has been able to find a fix. Our best bet is to submit a ticket and just make 343 aware of the problem.
