Consumption of data is too high

Hi 343 can you please investigate what is going on with the game since yesterday it’s been consuming too much data. I am playing on 4G use to be 25 mb per match or even less. Now its 200mb per match yesterday i got kick out of a match aft ler 40mn of playing the game took 1.8gb. Please investigate if anyone is fqcingvthis please share. I have a friend who got 600mb of data taken after playing 3 game

Microsoft are probably collecting metadata on all your gaming activity within Halo.

yes , it happened recently after alpha pack event , for me it used around 2 GB per hour and the bad part is it caused unstable letancy due to consuming most of the bandwidth !

Is it certain it’s only Halo Infinite? Is it possible you have background applications uploading and downloading as well?

Downloads, chats, streaming, videos etc can all rack up data.

Make sure texture streaming is disabled as well.

I know. I’ve been trying to raise this issue with Halo Support for a while. This was their response

Halo Support handles issues like crashes, game save corruption, player reports, visual glitches, and general in-game bugs. Issues like these are unintended by the developers and can be fixed by repairing the game’s programming. If the issue you are reporting is an in-game bug, please respond to this automated message so our agents can review your ticket. Our team can bring your reported bugs directly to the developers of Halo.

They’re really trying to blame players for the insane data consumption that Halo Infinite cause that 343 made. It’s ridiculous.

Some more information in case anyone’s curious. The short version is that it’s not the actual playing the game in matches that uses up a crap ton of data. Each match is like 11 mb, 75-80 mb in the worst case scenario in like a BtB match or something like that. It is literally just the menu, which uses up to over 300 mb when loading up.

Halo Follower put out a video on this just about an hour ago.

Essentially every time you load up the game, play a match, and then load the menu again it’s roughly 1 gigabyte of data. Multiply that by how every many matches you play in any given amount of time and the math speaks for itself.

This explains why menus are so sluggish to load, and why we’re locked out of customization when loading into a match. All your customization options have to be re-downloaded in each individual menu. The game is downloading information every single time you change into a new menu and back again rather than just saving that information like, oh, I dunno, every other damn game in existence?!

This is a ridiculous amount of data. I just wonder if any level of desync would be alleviated if this was fixed.

I’m not sure. I saw that video too and I though that this issue was present even in the HCS tournament where they used LAN connections instead of wireless/network. My understand is that this is a separate issue entirely. But with this game, who knows.

If this is true… wwwhhhyyyyyy. What idiot designed that? As a programmer reading this causes me to lose braincells.

If that’s true I wonder if (while loading menus) its actually less bandwidth intensive to stream the game than run it locally. Cause if so that’d be immensely stupid.

Edit: I submitted a support ticket for this and got a reply back saying they’re aware of the issue. I hope it is fixed soon because just thinking about the electricity being burned by that much unnecessary data transfer is awful. At least noone is playing the game lol.

I got a response from a live agent after responding to their automated response. Here’s what they told me

At this time, we don’t have a workaround that we can share with you, but please know that this has already been logged with the development team.

I wouldn’t get my hopes up. These are the type of people that would need explicit instruction to fix a problem.

Oh god this makes me so angry, I KNEW it was the images being downloaded every freaking time I went into the menus!!! Why do we even download anything for a client if they’re not going to store the images on my machine so it doesn’t suck up bandwidth downloading them after literally every single match?! what BONEHEAD thought this one up?!

Friends talking about customizing stuff between matches while I sit there with my little loading symbols and black screen and they’re like check me out! and I’m like, I love you, I’d love to, but my screen is black and nothing’s loading. Send me a screenshot of your screen.

I’ll time it next time and see how long it takes for the main menu to load and then the customization menu options and THEN the specific customization bay I click on. Because It’s going to be close to ten minutes total.

I have to imagine it would alleviate a noticeable chunk. I’m not a tech person but if both of these things are putting strain on the same internet connection it stands to reason removing one of them will ease whatever problems are being caused by the strain.

Genuinely would love to know what absolute dunce or team of know-nothings thought this was a grand idea.

They are definitely doing that, but the game is also loading in assets every single time you load the menu. It’s evident because the menu takes so long too load and I’m on a wired conection. Every time I play Halo my connection is throttled.

On Reddit looks like they found the cause. The season 2 banner image is being redownloaded 1000-2000 times, and happens between every match.

Fix coming in the August drop pod:

In the mean time I suppose everyone on a limited Internet plan have to stop playing altogether until the drop pod. This seems like a fix that requires a hot patch, but the infrastructure behind Infinite seems very clunky.

I just read the Reddit thread about this. It’s sooo utterly ridiculous I don’t know whether to be mad or lmao. Supposedly they’ve deployed a server side fix for this but my God, do they actually have interns developing the game at this point.

Using deductive reasoning based on common issues with networking to ask questions when I’m unaware of the actual issue going on to try and help someone with the issue they’re facing is gaslighting now?

Okie dokie artichokie
