Anyone else have repeated video signal loss when watching any videos on the Halo channel?
Anytime I watch anything on the channel about a minute into whatever I’m watching the video signal from my XB1 to my TV is lost, the screen goes black, then the screen reappears to the video I’m watching and it repeats this about every 30 seconds to a minute continually after that.
This does not happen while I am playing any games on the Xbox 1, nor during any cut scenes during a game, however it does like to do it after I have found a terminal in-game and watched the terminal video after being taken out of the game to watch it, then after going back into the game it does the video signal loss and reappear thing in-game until I hard reset my XB1, then it’s fine.
We have not had any reports of this issue prior to this post, but will watch for it. Thank you for posting the issue.
I have had the same problem as soon as I start to watch any videos on the halo channel I lose video signal and it doesn’t come back till I completely rest my X1. It’s fine playing games but when I go to watch anything on the halo channel I lose video signal.

Can you provide a list of the hardware you are using? I can assume you are using an Xbox One, but if you could list everything from that point, it would help us troubleshoot this issue… What sort of cable are you using? Do you cross through anything such as an HDMI splitter or soundbar? Which HDMI port do you use on your TV, what sort of TV/Monitor are you using?
We are trying to understand this issue, and attempting to reproduce, but need to get an idea of what hardware this is happening with as we are unable to duplicate internally. Any info provided is greatly appreciated!
Yes a Xbox One and I’m using the cable’s that came with it and a vizio tv and I’m not going through any other boxes or outlets.

Am assuming you are going to the TV in HDMI, do you have the ability (cables, etc) to try Component and see if there is something with the HDMI that is at issue? Again, just trying to isolate the issue, and if you can help, that would be great…
Yes, I am going to the HDMI on my TV and I don’t think I have any extra component cables laying around.

Couple more questions: Which model of Vizio TV are you using? How many HDMI ports, and which port are you accessing with your Xbox?
There’s 2 HDMI ports on the tv the TV is about 3 years old.

Just curious if you have had a chance to try both HDMI ports? Also, the TV does not have a build in DVR or other service that can record programming, I am assuming… Again, just trying to get an idea of what could be messing up the signal, so any info on the set is going to be useful. Feel free to direct message me with the TV model if you want me to investigate it a bit…
I tried both HDMI ports same results still lost video signal as soon as I go to watch a video on the halo channel and there is no built in dvr or recording programming.
One last thing… when you lose video signal, the process is as follows (assumptions made on the way the app works)
- Launch Halo Channel
- See 'Welcome Back [Your gamertag here] message
- See Guide Screen with videos and twists visible to navigate through
- Select a video
- Press Play
-
Possible See an Ad
- See ‘Bumper Screen’ that tells you what video is coming up (In case you forgot…)
- Video begins to play
- End screen with recap of what you wanted and a video with countdown timer indicating it will be next to launch
- Press Xbox Guide (Big X button) in center of controller to return to desktop
- Press Menu button to open menu
- Select Quit to close Halo Channel when done
This, our ‘Golden Path’ scenario, walks the user through the basic functional test (Smoke Test) we perform. From launch to quitting, with a video played to verify that service as well. If you could let me know which portion fails, and if you can bypass (For example, if you launch The Bulletin, and the screen goes black with a video not loading, can you press Guide button to get to Dashboard then quit? If a different video loads instead? Or if you get an error screen such as the Grunt Plushy or the Assassination error page.
Also note if it is the same video that has the issue, or if it is different behavior across multiple videos. Videos that require special entitlements include Nightfall and Terminal videos, as they are tied to other products or offerings, while videos such as The Sprint and The Bulletin are available to everyone.
Again, trying to determine the point of failure, so we can try to isolate the cause… Pardon the long post, and probably not-very-interesting explanation of Golden Path testing, etc… What can I say, I am a test nerd
Yeah everything works up Intel the point, I wanna watch a video like the night fall series, I haven’t got to see yet. So I select the halo channel and it says welcome back I pick the first episode on the nightfall to watch and it brings up the buffering logo and then it plays for like 2 seconds then my screen goes blue and says no signal and that’s it so have to completely shut down my Xbox and unplug it from the power brick and plug it back in and then I turn on the Xbox and I have video signal.
I got the Xbox one bundle with the master chief collection for Christmas and after 4 days of trying to install the digital copy I went and got the game on disc and installed it a lot faster via disc could something there miss up the nightfall series on the halo channel though?

Honestly, no idea… Will look into that, but as far as we know, it should treat both physical and digital copies identically. When you installed the physical copy, did you also redeem the 5x5 (25 character) code for Nightfall that was an insert in the box?

If you play a video, such as The Sprint or The Bulletin (or most of the Featured videos) do those videos play successfully?
Well the halo channel is down but I downloaded Netflix on the Xbox one and it does the same thing, when I select Netflix and it is loading the movies to view them it starts flashing from picture to the blue no signal screen back to picture and them finally it just stays at the blue no video signal screen.

Thank you for that update. Based on the behavior between our app, and the Netflix app, my honest guess would be that something is triggering the failsafe on the DRM used by various Xbox One apps.
Most apps that play video, particularly commercial video, have some form of Digital Rights Management, where they ensure that the user is entitled to view content. For some apps, such as Halo Channel, that could be simply checking that you have purchased Nightfall or have MCC. Further, to protect content from being distributed, there is a check to ensure that the system does not have a video capture card, DVR or other recording device, or recording sofware.
If detected, this will render the videos null, blacking out the screen, or failing out of the video. This sounds like what you are experiencing. Is there anything within your system, such as a DRV, or a SmartTV with recording capabilities, or Twitch Broadcast, etc… that might be interfering with your playback? We have even seen this triggered with inexpensive multi-port HDMI splitters, or soundbars that require you route HMDI through them before the TV.
If you could give me an idea of what is inline on your system, that might help us narrow down the issue. It sounds like we are likely heading in the right direction to figure this out, we just need to dial in a bit more on what is potentially the root cause!
Do you think somewhere the game DVR could be on or checked on the xbox one causing it to loss video signal or is some other app on, I’m still getting used to the Xbox one and all the new features.

The built in Xbox One game DVR won’t work with Halo Channel… And it shouldn’t interfere with the app at all. Halo Channel is a small app, outside of the app space that the game DVR would interact with.
In most of the case I have checked into, this sort of signal loss can come from HDMI issues, particularly if you route through multiple items. For example, if you have the setup as follows:
Xbox One → Soundbar → TV or Xbox One → HDMI multiport box (allowing multiple HDMI signals to a single HDMI port) → TV or the issue I myself encountered:
Xbox One → Cable Box → TV (my cable box has a DVR function I never used, because it wasn’t toggled on (I am a cheap tester…) but it recognized the hardware was present and blocked my own signal. My solution was to go from Xbox → TV, with nothing between… it also meant having to swap HDMI cables if I wanted to use my Xbox 360 or my older, but still awesome BluRay player.
While I haven’t been able to gather enough data, I am wondering if there is anything specific to some of the TVs that may have smart features… For example, if the TV itself has a software, or even hardware DVR ability. Still trying to gather info on the brand/model of TVs that seem to have this issue.
If you go directly from Xbox One to TV, can you let me know, either here or in a direct message, what sort of TV you are using? Preferably make/model so I can do some poking into that? Be warned, it could take a little time for me to look into stuff, and I am trying to answer all the issues I can in the forums, but I am very interested in getting to the point of problem on this issue.
