I just wanna say, massive congrats to 343 for making an amazing marketing campaign with Halo 5: Guardians. Over the past 3 years, we’ve slowly seen events in comics, novels and other media (films like Nightfall) converge into a single, massive story that leads to Halo 5. We get few details here and there, and knowing that fans like to speculate, 343 took full advantage of that. Instead of letting us speculate crazy theories, we’ve mostly had small, intermittent reveals, like when they revealed the planet shown in concept art to be Sangheili (albeit in an obscure making of video), after letting us sort of figure that out ourselves. They built up this mystery and left us with little bits and pieces to put together, much like that puzzle. We saw 4 Spartans in that video back in November. We guessed they had to be Spartan-IVs and co-op characters. We saw Blue Team in the comics, and John leaving on “missions” with them. We added 2 and 2 and figured out that Blue Team was going to be the co-op characters for the campaign and that the Spartans with Locke were probably characters we’ve seen as well, like Buck, and what not. And guess what, they revealed that as well, without completely confirming it, leaving a sort of suspense until they reveal it.
This is fantastic. We’re getting more and more of the story without actually spoiling the events of the game, and without being bored waiting for the game. In-between the game, we get some little pieces of story and lore that builds up into the state of the Halo universe right up as H5 starts. This is really massive. 343 has done what no other video game company has managed to do. Even their ARG is amazing. They’ve drawn us into the Halo universe.
