So I have never really given it any thought and/or I just missed it, Why did Chief light a ring to kill off the flood at the end of Halo 3? I thought the rings were to kill the food supply not the flood.
The ring wasn’t fully made iirc the blast from the ring would destroy itself, the ark and the surrounding area in which the flood had infested.
but we found out later that the Ark was not destroyed but damaged.

The halo effect does indeed kill larger flood forms, such as combat forms and Graveminds. However, individual flood cells aren’t necessarily killed, and could thus grow again into a large infestation given enough food. That’s why Cortana said it doesn’t technically kill Flood, because lower flood forms can survive it.
It’s likely that at the time of CE, bungie hadn’t fully nailed down how they wanted the Halos to work. But by 3, they definitely established that the Halos directly affected Flood as well. The halo 3 terminals confirm this.
