343 just made an announcement regarding Halo Infinite multiplayer:

> Halo is for everyone. We can confirm #HaloInfinite multiplayer will be free-to-play and will support 120FPS on Xbox Series X. More details will be shared later!

So there we go. I’m actually excited about all the new Halo fans that will take their first leap into the franchise because of this, hopefully we find ourselves with some new fans

not sure how to feel about this. i suppose a battle pass will be implemented?

Very good news. It’s been rumored upon for months, glad it’s actually happening. I figured it would after the grapple hook and open world were confirmed though.

I have a good feeling

Idk how I feel about this. Free to play is a perfect excuse to monetize the hell outta the game.

It’s also a great way to maintain a steady stream of money with which to expand the Halo Infinite campaign “for 10 years.”

I don’t know. I’m really worried because microtransactions will be worse than I thought. I hope it not cosmetic only because halo has always been earning cosmetic.

I sincerely hope multiplayer launches as a polished and full-featured experience, rather than an early access game with expectations set lower because it’s F2P.

So, the recent rumors that Xbox Live Gold could become free for F2P games is getting stronger:

That’s my concern… F2P sounds fantastic because it means far more people will be able to play the game, but it also means that 343 will have to find another source of income… which could mean rampant microtransactions. I hope I’m just being overly concerned in thinking that.

My other concern though is the price of the game. Will it be the usual $60 base price? If so, then why? With previous games, the $60ish price included campaign, MP, forge, etc. If MP is gonna be free, then $60 would be a bit over priced for getting the campaign alone.

It’s concerning to say the least. I know they confirmed no loot boxes, but there will be microtransactions. You know that’s how this will be funded. I couldn’t imagine a worse system for Halo than H5’s REQ system, but now there is a strong possibility Infinite’s system might be even worse.

Perhaps this new approach will be acceptable and perhaps it will be a total trash heap. “F2P” has conditioned us to realize a game will be awful from a monetization standpoint, but a new generation might mean a new approach.

I will wait for official word on how progression and unlocks will be handled. The only way it would be okay is if there is some resemblance to MCC’s system and they somehow tie things in well with services like Game Pass and Gold.

Well I’ve got a bad feeling. Typically multiplayer games only go f2p to help with population. The trade-off is a flood of cheaters and really bad players in general, along with some sort of microtransactions. 343 said in their blogpost " Halo Infinite will not include real-money loot boxes", they didn’t say it won’t include microtransactions.

Sounds fantastic, provided the confirmation of no real-money loot boxes holds true. If you want to pay money for a battle pass grind or buying a specific item, go ahead. Loot Boxes are just predatory.

I wonder if this will be like Modern Warfare, where “Arena” is in the full game but something like Warzone is F2P, with all its REQs and 12-man fireteam glory.

Correct, but with 343 confirming no real money loot boxes (like REQ packs) you have the most predatory of MTX systems out of the picture. Hopefully it can be something more fair.

Also interested to hear if custom games is included in the F2P version or if the full game must be purchased.

I dunno… somehow i don’ t like this decision…

Maybe, but since the game is f2p I’m worried monetization will get in the way of progression and customization.

Or very expensive season passes and/or expansions like Destiny or MK…

It is true that there will be big problems to face (hackers, the type of monetization, etc.). But I think 343 is really committing to this project for the future. I am sure they will try to do their best.

What was wrong with H5s REQ system? Arena played out the same as any other Halo game, and then you could just fool around in Warzone. It was a great way for players who didn’t know static/dynamic timers of power weapons and vehicles to take a shot at using some.
