Concerns about Halo 6 cross-play

Hi guys,

I know Halo 6 hasn’t been confirmed to be cross-play with PC/windows 10, but I have concerns should it happen. First, let me say I WANT this to happen. A bigger and more diverse community seems nice! But, I am worried that the game wouldn’t be balanced with Xbox players using the standard controller and PC players using a mouse and keyboard.

My questions:
-Do PC players have a technical advantage over consoler players playing a cross-play FPS ? EDIT: From your responses, the answer is YES.
-Has this ever happened before ? EDIT: From TheLegendary117’s answer, the answer is YES with Gears of War.
-Should PC players be forced to play with the Xbox controller ?

Thanks ! See you in BTB.

I think it would be a good idea opening up the community, allowing inter-console relationships to flourish. With the way H5 Forge went, aiming is not great for keyboard and mouse users, however pc players do have the ability to use their xbone controller. So I think it would work, just as long as people don’t mod or hack their way through Halo 6, and that their pc rigs are powerful enough to run Halo 6.

PC players definitely have a significant advantage. I don’t really think that making PC players use a xbox controller is really a reasonable solution. I know quite a few people come to PC because they don’t like how controllers feel or preform. I’m sure it could be exploited easily anyway. I’d rather just see Xbox and PC matchmaking separate. It makes things a lot less complicated.

I would only be okay with cross-play if it were campaign only. Competitive multiplayer cross-play is a huge no-go.

Add customs into the mix as well. Agree on keeping competitive / matchmaking out, but customs would be a boon

That was my main concern. I don’t want to face mouse/keyboard players in ranked or even unranked matches. I agree with your campain-only point. Even for custom games I wouldn’t want PC players to have an advantage over me.

But cross-play would feel very limited if Xbox players weren’t able to play seriously with PC players, thus the idea of imposing the Xbox controller, if maintaining such a control was ever possible. I mean, for die-hard Halo fans who don’t want an Xbox, a controller is still a far cheaper solution.

Significant advantage? I think what you meant to say is that the difference is colossal. PC gamers are on a different planet. That’s already reflected in Gears of War with crossplay.

I think there should be a server selector like in Battlefield. That way there could be Xbox only/PC only or PC and Xbox servers.

I would not like to see the main Halo titles on PC and the main reason is that 343 are forced to make the game work with more than 1 engine which will probably make it more expensive and difficult to develop the game because it’s not only 1 hardware to develop for.
There is also the fact that it’s much easier to modify the game on PC which can be seen with Halo 5 forge which may cause cheating issues in matchmaking and that is something that will hurt the game and the community on itself.
There are also the fact that matchmaking cannot be as balanced if it’s on PC if everyone has equal network connection because every PC are different when it comes to RAM, CPU, GPU ect.

Not being a computer guy, I hadn’t taken all of this into consideration. Those seem like good points. I guess it’ll be a business decision from 343i deciding if developing for PC is worth it, but from a Xbox player point of view I wouldn’t like to see the exclusive I like the most going to PC without benefiting me with a bigger pool of players. Then again if cross-play happened, all kinds of problems regarding competitive play would seem to emerge. So…I’m lost. I want two things that seem very difficult to conciliate.

If Halo 6 comes to PC I don’t think cross-play would work if it’s KBM vs controller. Console shooters need a lot of AA to just be able to shoot the target, I’m sure the PC version would have less AA but the precision of a mouse is still too much. I just don’t see how it would work.
