So, with the TU just around the corner it’s likely the DMR will receive some form of nerf and that will (hopefully) make people consider using the other rifles in the game.
The light rifle is probably the most unique weapon in the game so id like help compiling all the facts and tricks. I’ll start with what i know.
Unscoped the Light Rifle takes 1.8 seconds to kill a player at 5 shots in total.
When scoped in the Light Rifle takes 1.3 seconds to kill a player between 4 shots.
A single zoomed in shot followed by 3 unscoped shots results in a 4 shot kill. Minimum kill time unknown.
2 Zoomed shots + 2 Unzoomed shots results in the optimal kill time.
2 Zoomed shots +1 Melee results in the fast load out weapon kill time (including the boltshots charge time).
When unscoped the Light Rifle works as a 3 Shot Burst Weapon making it very efficient at landing headshots.
When scoped the Light Rifle fires single more powerful shots.
Like the DMR it has a X3 zoom magnification scope.
The Light Rifle is not a hitscan weapon and has low bullet magnetism making it tricky to use.
I find the Light Rifle benefits greatly from the “Auto Sentry” AA and the “Stability” perk.
Two scoped shots and two hip fire shots land kill faster than normal. Better than the one shot zoomed and 3 hip fire. The final burst will bleedthrough their shields and is very satisfying to do < This is something i use and not common knowledge to those who try to use the LR. It makes it a bit more viable at closer ranges.
Stability is must (if you hate flinch) since unlike the DMR, the LR has drawbacks and the flinch is annoying. Since you are not using Ammo thanks to Stability, using Firepower with another utility Rifle will somewhat balance out the low ammo count.
3 hip fire shots will allow an instant melee kill via bleedthrough. This will help you if you find you’re self at CQC and many won’t expect you to do this.
I haven’t used the light rifle much yet, but in the times that I have it scope kills faster than the DMR. Doubles unscoped as the BR. Best of both worlds if ya ask me.

Once you master the feel of the non-hitscan shots, sure. It has a bunch of drawbacks though, its scope is a lot clunkier than the UNSC rifles and takes slightly longer to zoom in, its hipfire bursts are slower than the BR’s firerate, and it suffers from scoped viewkick much more than the BR or DMR. In my opinion, it requires the most skill out of all the loadout weapons and is the most rewarding to use successfully. Landing that 4sk on a DMR user when you’re one shot and winning the 1v1 is almost as satisfying as the Halo 3 BR 4sk.
Not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but the LR can also kill with two scoped shots and a melee at close range, giving it (potentially) the fastest melee killing time for the precision loadout rifles. Then again, “potentially” always seems to be the key word with the LR.
As others have said, the stability mod is pretty much a necessity for fully utilizing its powerful 4sk scoped ability. It’s also trickier to land shots at range compared to the DMR, and it’s the clunkiest precision weapon up close. Still, I think it’s the most rewarding to master.
Not sure if this is true or not, but when I was messing around in customs, I found that the LR can do a weird kind of “doubleshot” glitch where if you scope in at almost exactly the same time as your shot, you should a burst and a scoped shot simultaneously. Theoretically, that could result in a perfect time to kill of under a second if you land two doubleshots, but I haven’t been able to pull it off in matchmaking. I think you might have to be host, which would explain why I’ve only done it (pretty much by accident) in customs and forge.
P.S. Damage boost with the gun is a three shot (zoomed) kill anywhere on the body.
No shields = 1 shot kill anywhere on the body. Clean up on a spawn trap in Exile = lulz
AND
I highly recommend you do not try to outright win a 1v1 vs. a BR or DMR. Go for a nade/PP combo cause I swear you will lose 90% of the time.
AND
When you shoot it, you gotta MAKE SURE your cross hair is on the person to get the hit. Even if it takes you longer to pull the trigger, its how the gun works.
Yeah, autosentry works great. Also, grenade related upgrades and packages work quite well. The Light Rifle, at least for me, is not as effective up close as some other precision rifles, but grenade upgrades can really help.
Two scoped shots and a melee is (I believe) the fastest kill you can achieve with any spawn weapon in Halo 4 (if you account for the charge times of the PP and Boltshot).

It depends on the map for me. Gotta go with the DMR on BTB maps on the secondary. I hate how easy the gun is to use but since i roll with Stability, i gotta have something to offset the low ammo on spawn while maintaining my long range game.
On smaller maps, using an automatic (any will do, whatever you’re comfortable with) is viable. Again, Stability is must for me.
If you go with the Supressor on a small map. Call in a speed boost, you won’t be disappointed with how much destruction you can cause (if you are move around the map smartly).
