So I just read over Tashi’s post about the competitive direction of Halo Infinite! If you haven’t seen it yet I encourage you to check it out >>HERE<<. I’m so excited to see a collaboration between both PC and Console communities.
343i have gone above and beyond so far, ensuring that this game is player first at every aspect. I can’t wait to be able to try and get my name out there with this game. If I ever got the opportunity to compete for Australia it would be a dream come true.!
How does everyone else feel about the topic?
What’s your initial thoughts and feelings? - Do you think it’ll be balanced between platforms? - What’s your personal preference? [PC] [Xbox] - If you’ve got anything else to add feel free to!

The collaboration between PC and Console is honestly a ridiculous mistep. Honestly it is ignoring the majority of the eSports crowd and it just seems like they are ignoring the people who would compete. I play on both inputs and just from playing both ways during the flight. Mouse and keyboard is absurdly easier. Meanwhile for controller, aim assist is literally using something that that is no organic to make it easier too. This just honestly makes me frustrated.
Cross input would be a great addition to esports if it was balanced. Unfortunately as of right now I don’t believe it is.
Controller on console feels terrible the tech flight had almost no aim assist. Some are speculating that this may have been a bug, which I hope it was or else the esports scene will be dominated by MnK.
I hope 343 addresses this in the future because as of right now the inputs aren’t balanced which is a shame because I felt like halo was my most competitive game.

It literally is impossible to have it to be balanced. They would have to make controller aim assist to the point where it wouldn’t be humanely possible to make it fair, but then that ignores the pure human side of it on the mouse and keyboard side.

Am I missing something here. There are lot of threads calling for more or less (no) aim assist.
But people seem to be dichotimising aim assist into all or nothing. Off vs super deadly aimbot.
Surely there is a subtle sweetspot of aim assist for controllers that balances the easier use of MnK.

I actually find it very strange that 343 even gave the okay on this. Making esports cross input off the bat sounds like an extremely risky decision since cross play already divides a playerbase. They could’ve at least waited to implement in this in a single tournament to test it before making this the staple of halo esports.
It seems like they are favoring PC heavily for Halo Infinite which is pretty concerning. Halo Infinte was made up to be the Halo to revive the franchise but they’re taking a lot of steps that could cripple the franchise.

I don’t get it. It is incredible tone deaf to the actual eSport scene. Shroud will go off forever about how having these are ridiculous.

Chill? I am just stating how I feel about it. I am crossing no line with my post and it wasn’t even written in a “unchill” way.

Thanks for that link… some fascinating insight.
But it’s probably not relevant for 99.99% of Halo players…
If I’m a controller player operating at Platinum 4 level… and you are MnK player operating at Platinum 4 level… then we are good to go in playing with / against each other.
It doesn’t matter that you would be Platinum 5-6 with a controller… or that I would be Platinum 2-3 with a MnK. Or even the other way around. You can only play to the standard you can with the tools you got.
The SBMM will bring two equally performing teams together… and we can have some fun.
And overall you have two big populations of players… so 343 can easily compare the skill rank distributions on both sides. If they have the balance right then the curves should be pretty much the same. It would be easy to slowly buff/nerf the assissting as required.
At the very top end, with professional players, it might make a difference… but that is because there is no balancing of the teams… and you need to squeeze every % out of what you have.

Professional players have repeatedly stated they don’t want mixed input competitions because they note the competitive disadvantages each side has. Currently a mixed input system would be broken for competition. I think after the first year they will change it because PC players are going to easily win these games especially with precision weapons.
I play on both inputs however Halo is the only game I still play on controller because I learned to love the game through that input. Doom is a great example on how different controller can be from PC. It feels like a significantly different game on controller because of the speed you can play it at.
I don’t really see how they are going to balance all the weapon on 2 different input, at the highest competitive level.
I believe some weapon will be much better on MnK such as the sniper, while other that benefit the most from aim assist like the BR may be better on a controller.
In addition to that, they said that ranked matchmaking would be based on the input, because they think it would be unfair otherwise, but still want cross input tournament. This does not really make sense to me.
I like the direction they are taking the pro scene with set teams that are sponsored with roster changes which will make it much easier to have fans and support. I like watching eSports here and there especially the big tournaments and I think this will make them more exciting. I hope they have incentives like shop credits for watching X amount of hours of tournaments to help increase viewership and hype around them. It’s a system used by Overwatch which is great, you can get specific skins, eSport skin credits or special sprays for watching different streams.
In terms of input, I think it is good. As someone else said, if you are in the same rank as someone then they don’t have an advantage on you. They may have better aim, but you have better game knowledge. That’s going to be true even with the same input. I do think there should be two separate Champ leaderboards split by input though, as SWAT and Snipers will probably be completely dominated by m&k users.
Everyone has the option to use either as you can use k&m on Xbox or controller on PC. Fortnite did this for major tournaments and almost everyone was on k&m, but players still found success with controller. I think we will see more of the top players on m&k, but maybe there will be a mix. I think it is good to provide options as players will be entering the game via both methods due to crossplay. If mouse and keyboard ends up being superior then some controller pros will transition, others won’t. Most players who are pros are there because their knowledge, teamwork and decision making is top tier so they will be able to transition from controller to k&m because they practice so much.
They are planning some stuff with announcing more about eSports and I would love to see what they have planned. I want to know the team names, locations, tournament plans, what players are signed up, will there be a league? What do the armour coatings/weapon skins look like? There’s so much info I want to know more about. I always find the MLG/HCS settings to be the most enjoyable way to experience the game.
Let’s see how this turns out. MnK vs Controller seems like a risky move but maybe it is the right step for the future of all competitive games. We have to wait and see if they will adjust aim assist and balance it the right way. For a PC and MnK player only this is ofc great news.
So lots of comments here regarding the balancing issues between the two platforms. There’s still plenty of time to have the two balanced out. This is what the feedback is designed to bring to light.
When it comes to comp though, after reading the link I posted above it explains that open brackets will be Xbox only. Then main stage will be PC only. Technically there’s no disadvantage there.
From my understanding if you’re a gold rank vs a gold rank or diamond vs diamond there’s not going to be a difference. The only time it could become unfair is late season Onyx/Champion rank. That’s only if it is unbalanced when the game launches, otherwise there isn’t going to be a problem.

Open bracket is played on Xbox, but players can use controller or mouse and keyboard. Main stage is on PC, but they can play with m&k or controller.
The only reason this is the case is due to the huge volume of entrants they expect for each tournament so it is much easier to ship and setup Series X consoles for open bracket.

It’s smart, but man some of those open bracket people will be upset with the limit of 120 FPS and lack of mouse configs.
I think this will just lead to people raging over which has the advantage. Hopefully I’m wrong but it seems like they are just adding fuel to the fire.

Yeah, I suppose when people are accustomed to playing one thing it’s hard to transition to something different. It is frustrating to think about. Right now at least we have no choice but to wait and see how 343 tackle this challenge, and make it viable for everyone to play equally without one side having an advantage over the other.
