Why do they want a ranking system so bad?? For gods sakes it is just a game, how does having pixels next to your gamertag show “skill” or competitiveness. It really does not take any talent at all to play a video game. The only people who should be labeled competitive players are people who play real life sports not video games. I mean honestly it is just getting pathetic asking for ranks, Halo is for having fun. It seriously makes me face palm when some of these competitive players act all cool cause they play MLG. So why do the majority of them keep complaining…

To show off?
They think that being the best is the only proof of your worth as a human being?
To sell their accounts to justify their unemployment to their parents?
They think that a high rank is an excuse for free “wins” in arguments?
To justify their bullying over Xbox LIVE?
…oh! and um, for the “incentive” to keep playing the game.
It shows how good they are. The higher the rank, the better they are. It gives them motivation to become better. Showing the rank shows other players that they are better.

This is coming from the guy who immediately assumes I suck at Halo.
You don’t understand why competitive players like having ranks? Thats like saying why do casuals like having different armor, weapon skins, and vizor colors.
From my understanding, people who are against visible skill ranks are:
Unable to handle the minority which flame based on said skill level (even though this type of flaming happens with any numeric niche; take K/D for example)
Don’t like being told and shown where they place in regards to the population, especially considering 1-50 was fairly accurate. The reason it was removed was because “No one liked being told they weren’t the best”. Basically, the ye old saying “The truth hurts”
Complain about a faction which boosted and sold accounts, a problem which could be fixed with an improved system. Basically, it’s not an excuse to remove a skill-based ranked altogether, it’s an excuse that the developers need to get less crappy tools to deal with said faction.

Because competitive players find it fun to play competitvitly, plain and simple just like others find it fun to use forge,or play social. Get over it, we all play Halo our own way, thats what makes it a great game.

In Korea, there are tournaments similar to the superbowl for videogames like Starcraft. It’s called the E-games or something, and winners get a LOT of money. So gaming actually can be a very competitive thing. Those people breathe that stuff.
