I’m not just talking about in video games, I mean everywhere. Nowadays as a child, you are told that “It’s not about winning, it’s taking part that counts” “Everyone’s a winner” etc.
This is what is ruining competitive play, children now seem to think that winning no longer means anything. There is no forfeit for losing, as everyone gains something from the event. This then filters into gaming, Halo 3 Social used to ONLY reward the winning team, the losing team would leave the game with nothing and their heads in their hands wondering what went wrong.
Game Developers now have this mentality that everyone has to feel special, even though they didn’t win. This explains the poor Medals in this game and almost everything you do can be rewarded whether or not it is useful to winning.
It encourages the likkle children to keep playing while the competitive community has nothing.
Think about it from a profit point of view - 75k Casuals is better than a strong 20k competitive community. The likkle children stop playing as it doesn’t reward them for being awful.
there are people making games with the entire design philosophy of being purely competitive, it’s almost better in a way “this everyones a winner attitude” it’ll separate the competitive from the purely casual from the get go. competitive games are now going to be made on purpose. whether a competitive shooter ever gets made for a console seems a little unlikely, since consoles are so mainstream in nature
That is part of my issue, this game is too child-friendly.
But the competitive nature of this game seems to be ruined. If the upcoming TU can fix this, I’ll be a happy man. But I can’t see it happening.
But thats what most people want. Competitve players are in the majority. The rest of the population is pretty content, becasue they are getting what they want.
They want a game that isn’t to difficult, that is rewarding to everyone. Call of Duty is a perfect example of that. Anyone can get a kill and rank up in Call of Duty.
But thats what most people like. They like the games that allow them to sit back and not have to do any work, and still come out on top because they put a little bit of effort into unlocking that really over powered weapon. Then they walk around without a care int he world. I can’t remember the last time I cared about losing a game in Call of Duty (never) becasue at the end of the game, I still got points.
Thats just what people want. Video games are a way to escape from hard work for some people, so they don’t want to have to do work when playing them.
But thats just my opinion and view of it, take it with a grain of salt.
> i wish halo had the same problem as starcraft, pure competition not enough people play due to anxiety of the heat of competing in every game format
This is actually a really interesting point. I would like to see what would happen if you lumped basically all team-slayer based gametypes into Team Slayer (e.g., swat, snipers, infection, etc.), and just had the game modes come up on rotations. Could be fun. Force people out of their comfort zone, try new gametypes, so forth.

thats not exaclty what i meant, the anxiety comes from competition, which while uncomfortable, it has nothing to do with anything being new, you’re used to what you’re playing its just the entire game is pretty much what league you can get to on the ladder, when i said every game format i meant that you can’t play a non competitive game type unless its in the arcade which is the equivalent of custom games in halo like race

Coming from someone who played both SC2 and previous Halo games to a high level(High master 1v1 in SC2 and multiple 50s in H3). Pure competition only works on pc now as Consoles are aimed for the casuals. Even in SC2 HoTS beta they added in exp for casual gamers. I guess the difference is at least SC2 has an actual good ranking system where as I get put up with guests every other game. Even when ranks are out this game will still be boring as the game play is so dumb downed after every Halo release.

i agree, thats what i wrote in a previous post, the fact of the matter is consoles are too mainstream in nature. the likely hood of a competitive fps being made on purpose for a console is unlikely. i get nerd chills thinking about an sc type ladder being implemented in halo

Sadly for me I think even if Halo had a SC2 like ranking system it wouldn’t work, as it doesn’t really show true MMR like a 1v1 playlist could. I see people who are Bronze 1v1 and can get to Master league in team games. But other than that like I said before ranks can’t save the game for me as it doesn’t feel like a Halo game anymore in my opinion.

agreed, you can have all the competition you want but if the game isn’t fun first there’s no point
