Before many people flip here is my take on this
- While the BR getting nerfed in H5 initially annoyed the hell out of me I realized that in higher level comp play the BR was really easy to use and there was almost no skill gap between how a onyx player and a champion player used the BR, however, with a gun like the magnum and DMR there was a clear skill gap with how it was used because you did not have to hit a burst but multiple individual shots meaning even if you were 1% better than your competition at hitting your shots you would win most of the time even when the ranks were close.
- With halo infinite toning down its movement abilities from H5 (unfortunately) a gun like this will be necessary not having a gun like this will make the only skill gap between players at a high skill level only focused on positioning and game sense and generally will slow the pace of infinite down as being caught outside of positioning will be more punishing as if you cannot out gun that kid even after he hits the first shot.
- While the BR is fun I don’t want it to be a bad gun but I would not want it to be the dominant gun as when it is it is just too easy to hit your shots at a higher level making things just suck overall
- That is my two cents what do you guys think about this suggestion?

Commando rifle is ideal for this
I think the skill barrier for hitting all your shots is actually pretty low.
It’s the game sense and map control that elevates a player anyway. At the top, most people aren’t going to be missing shots with any weapon.
I personally think the BR is the flagship Halo weapon and a game without it feels distinctly less like Halo to me. Ironic as it wasn’t in CE or Reach, but here we are.
Having precision weapons dominate at range is a real killjoy. That’s why I like the BR in Halo 3 for instance. You can’t insta-4 shot someone at range.
> 1) While the BR getting nerfed initially annoyed the hell out of me
I’m a little unclear on why you think the BR is nerfed or unusable? Surely you’ve never used the HI BR unless you work at 343 lol. What exactly makes you believe the BR is unsuitable for the ranked “go-to” gun?

I strongly disagree on that man I’ve played a ton of comp at a high level and having the magnum as the dominant gun or a DMR in reach makes hitting all your shots way harder than when the BR was dominant to the point where the different even between a champ 200 and a champ 50 feels like a world apart and makes equal in importance to positioning at higher levels due to the increased skill gap. As it is just a little bit harder to hit all of those shots
- I feel like just for comp the BR should be nerfed but for casual game types it should be dominant

Whoops I meant to say for H5 as I was using this as an example

I agree. Aim assist in modern, cross-play shooters is significantly stronger now. I’m a KBM user, but occasionally I’ll experiment with a controller on Cod Warzone / MCC and oh my god the game literally does everything for you.

I understand your point and it’s certainly through that with a burst weapon (and without trust rip) player differentiation at top level will be less concerning gunplay. However H2 and H3 both had their own ways giving players edges over their opponents while movement was more restricted and the BR more forgiving.
I really don’t see the commando becoming the competitive load out, doesn’t seem reliable enough in the gameplay and if descoped the effective range looks too short for a good allrounder weapon. I think the new BR has a good shot at becoming the competitive new standard also because the base speed of things seems a bit faster and in the training scene the aim assist and magnetism both look balanced.
Im going to have to say… I want BR starts.
If you want auto or some other variant… go make a playlist for it. Halo is returning to it’s roots… and that means BR.

What is with competitive types always wanting the game to be difficult to play or have aspects of the MP hard to do? Do people enjoy straining themselves for a kill and chalking it up to being skillful at the game? Whether the BR is “dominant” or not shouldn’t matter if one ACTUALLY has skill and can deal with it/over come it anyways, right? Comp people always want to nerf -Yoink- or remove -Yoink- rather than just play the game as is lol.
I disagree I think it’s good that game sense becomes more important the higher you get in ranked. It was like that in H5 too. At the highest level, everybody had a crazy shot whether it was the magnum or the BR, what made the difference is game sense and teamwork.
The only dominant thing in comp is the player (or a saw idk)
From a purely mechanical standpoint, the BR is able to generate the greatest skill ceiling out of all the utility weapons that have existed in Halo thus far for several reasons.
-
While using the BR, you must maintain your reticle on the enemy throughout the burst duration to achieve maximum damage. This is opposed to single fire weapons such as the DMR or pistol, meaning the BR requires more consistent tracking of the enemy (and therefore higher mechanical skill) to achieve maximal damage output.
-
BR spread, while somewhat controversial as a mechanic, adds significant depth to gameplay. One example of this depth comes from the fact that spread limits a utility weapons effectiveness at range. This means for a player to output maximal damage with the BR, they must not only consider the map and its sightlines, but always be considering the effective range of the BR. With precision type weapons such as the DMR, only the former consideration needs to be made. At the tactical level, this lowers the potential skill gap.
I’m quite certain that the BR as it existed in Halo 3 was significantly more difficult to use than and of the utility weapons as they existed in Halo 5.

I disagree strongly with point 1 and your conclusion halo infinite from the video uses hitscan registration instead of leading your shots (halo 3’s system) so likely it is going to be like the H2 BR having you only need to place your reticle on a player for about as long as you would with a DMR and magnum. While in Halo 3 it was difficult to hit your shots it was because you had to lead them, infinite does not have this system making the BR a lower skill weapon to use.

Sure let me just talk to my dev on speedial halo infinite is a mix of both my guy
The BR and other dominant gun-starts makes halo stale. Why play for power weapons or try out utility weapons when you can 3-shot headshot someone with a pistol or pepper someone down from across the map with a BR. Weapons in halo are supposed to fill a role, perform a task, and play into eachother. When you have a weapon that ‘does it all’ you LOWER the skill ceiling by making a weapon you can use anywhere, at any time, to near maximum effectiveness. Does your enemy have a shotgun? an assault rifle? a pistol? does it matter? your gun is 90% effective at all ranges and so you don’t have to think as hard about positioning, or playing to the sandbox, or controlling parts of the map. Just wander around and click on guys with your long-range damage hose.
Sure maybe it makes the very highest levels of competitive more competitive because the gun is “high skill” but if that’s how you want to play… make a playlist
EDIT: addendum. The new repulsor ability already inherently nerfs single-shot projectile weapons like the rocket launcher and plasma pistol, making these weapons even worse by giving everyone a super gun at start would just make them unusable.
As much as I personally would prefer the main utility to be a single shot weapon, provided the BR doesn’t have any garbage spread attached to it or excessive aim assist then we can minimize any issues with sweeping for headshots or issues with simply being easy to use. Especially if we had projectile instead of hitscan but I’m not holding out much hope for that.
Unlike Halo 5 there doesn’t appear to be 4 other near identical precision weapons to cause those same balance issues that caused the BR to fall by the wayside.
As of right now BR starts are the best option that I can see, at least for now. Hopefully flighting will allow us to iron out any possible kinks before launch.

Have you even played H5 what the pistol is a 5 shot gun and absolutely is not a fill all role it is hard to hit your shots with it anywhere past mid range. It is the gun that you have most of the time on you when I meant dominant gun a meant dominant STARTING GUN. Power weapons and power ups and map control are absolutely essential in that game if you have someone with camo or over shield constantly on the enemy team chances are you are losing 100%
-even in Halo CE map control was important because it gave you increased access and better angles on the enemy player come on man

That true but I’ve seen kids in this game with an insane magnum shot and ok positioning skill to that of diamond players be able to crush their way to champion tier that just would not have been possible in OG halo games
