I was thinking about the whole forge deal with file browser and whatnot, and I thought that a playlist which gave randomize forge maps from the file browser would be a great idea, especially for those wanting to get their map more attention in a easy way. What would your thoughts be on that kind of playlist?
About 99.9% of what people put on their file shares is not in anyway complete or playable in any sense that a majority of people would recognize. Nobody wants a community creations play list more than I do, but maps and game types need to be vetted and who has the time, resources, or interest to do the job properly? Bungie did it once with (I think it was called) Project Atlas - but even with all the vetting they did there were still some maps of questionable quality that made it into the rotation, and they were all “competitive, 4v4-style maps,” meaning that they all looked like garbage and only played well if you were an MLG sweat. 343 added some community-created maps into a couple of the standard Halo 4 play lists and the results were also, to put it charitably, mixed. It pains me to say it, but the problems with this type of play list are almost too many to count and largely insurmountable.

Well said! As a forger I spend an incredible amount of time building my maps, testing them, adjusting them, testing them some more, then I spend even more time taking screenshots and posting my map to at least 5 different websites. If people want their maps discovered, then they need to do the same. This is the first line of defense against garbage maps. If this said playlist only considered maps that have gone thru this process, then it could potentially work.
Yeah not the best idea, however… with a bit of tweaking it could work, so you make a custom game and you have the chance to open it to matchmaking, this means when you search for a game youll find a random game that is open to matchmaking, once youve found one, youll join it and itll work like a normal customs, the host can choose any map, any game mode etc…
As another playlist, they have just forge content, each month voted for by the community, so people submit maps, and its open to the whole community to vote what goes into the playlist so we actually get extremely good community made maps, not the rubbish forge maps we usually get! The BTB ones at the moment are by far the best forge maps i have ever played in matchmaking, usually there utter rubbish!!
Reach had something similar to this that the community voted on. Then the top 10 most voted maps went into a forge made “Community” playlist. I had quite a bit of fun in that playlist.
As mentioned above, you don’t want a playlist where everyone can just put whatever they want in there. That will end up similar to the Far Cry community. You would basically take a risk at every map you joined. Very time consuming. At least with the Reach option, the maps are tested and played before put into the playlist. Plus we vote for the maps we want.
Though the ones who do take the time and effort to make great balanced, competitive maps, don’t always get there maps advertised.
3 little words:
(which have come up on the Halo forums right before every Forge release since Halo 3)
"CUSTOM LOBBY BROWSER".
Halo PC had a great system where people could just host a lobby, open it up to people searching for a lobby to join, and the lobby would just fill up to capacity within a minute or so.
The only solution to the current problem would be something like this model.
- I make a cool BTB map on Ravine.
- I make a perfect Custom Game Type to go along with the map.
- I get 2 or 3 of my friends in a Custom Games Lobby.
- I set the “max player count” to 16.
- I open the lobby setting to “Public”.
- People in the 'public", looking for a new experience, would view the “CUSTOM GAMES BROWSER”.
- They would see my game, with 5 open slots left, and they would select “Join Lobby”.
- As Party Leader, when my lobby fills up, I start the match.
So, I ask you, 343i : WHY NOT a Custom Lobby Browser?
A community forge playlist would be pretty entertaining. I would also love to see a playlist consisting of the best forge remakes from across the Halo saga.
that would be AWESOME!
They had this playlist in Halo 4
