COMMUNICATION BETWEEN DEVELOPERS AND FANS

My first Forums i was active on regularly was for the game series Fable also a Microsoft exclusive like Halo series.I got interested in Fable games very late, after Fable 3 was released and the developers started doing Fable Legends for Xbox One.So i bought Fable 2 and 3 for Xbox 360 couple years after release and was missing pre order items that were available only at the release of those games. At the same time they developed next game for Xbox One the developers announced they are doing a remake of first Fable game for Xbox 360 originally released on first Xbox. And it came out called Fable Anniversary. Now the game had some bugs similar to Halo MCC mainly for same reasons, because it was rushed and had a smaller team making it.And they fixed it the best they could in a short time.Ok now that was a long intro from me,now lets get to the topic. The level of Communication between the developers and the fans during my time spent there was amazing and was a true example of how this things should be done! They were constantly active on the Forums, were humble and helpful and have updated us regularly of the the progressions on the next game.As for the Fans wishes they made all the pre orders items available again on store for Fable 2 and 3 which took a great effort from them for some even risking their jobs.I will never forget when discussing some bugs for Fable Anniversary like some bought items not appearing in the game for some people,it didn’t happen to me and it was fixed for people that had this problem. One of the higher developers messaged me and offering me some free dlc if i had this problem, now i was shocked, that was unbelievable that they cared so much for their Fans to do all this! Now i wish for Halo developers to have a similar type of Communication for their Fans, being more active on the Forums and update us more on the progress of the next game.Because no matter how many bugs i may have in a game and no matter how some things are not the way i wish they were,a good Communication between Developers and their Fans make all the difference and is priceless.

Well on the official Halo stream it was mentioned that they do read what is on Reddit and the forums, they even mentioned if you’re looking for a quick interaction Twitter. This was said yesterday during TMCC community play. I doubt they will offer you free DLC or skins, but that’s not what you should be looking for when submitting bugs. You may not see the devs reply to you, but I am sure they look at the good and bad submissions/inquires. I have submitted my fair share of bugs… most of the time the devs do not reply to me and in later patch notes I see that the issue I encountered has been corrected.

I would say the developer does not have to respond to every request or bug/issue, do I think they should respond to ones that gain some attention or are important? Yes. For example I noticed that the “more topics” button was missing here on waypoint when they updated it and made a thread, a 343 person responded and it was soon fixed. I mean that was the waypoint team, not full on game developing 343, but it was still pretty good.

I think its more important to just get the bug out their then hoping they respond or reward people. While it is kinda cool when they respond (even on non-bug related stuff, which happened to me once), its more important to just get it out there.

Just to clarify i didn’t get any free dlc for Fable when asked because i already bought every dlc that was available and it’s not what i want from 343 either,i also bought every dlc for Halo games.I just mentioned this because i was so surprised and happy that the developers cared so much for their fans that they would do such a thing.343i has gifted all the early MCC buyers a whole game Halo 3 ODST as apology for the bugs the game had(i wasn’t among those people,i got Xbox One and MCC later and bought ODST dlc). They also gave early buyers and now are gonna give all those people in insider program for MCC free exclusive emblems and nameplates. So when it comes to gifting people free stuff in their games 343 has done more than any developer would do.But i still don’t feel that the Communication between 343 and fans is as good as i experienced on Fable forums. For me they seem distant and are not giving us enough information on what they have planned for their next game.We are waiting 3 years for next Halo and we post here on Forums our ideas and wishes but no one gives us any indication of what to expect, they have been doing this thing since Halo 4.We have no idea what the game will be like and then it comes out and people are disappointed because they didn’t expect this or that.

You’ve gotta remember, forums are frankly an outdated method of online communication. Fable 3 released 8 years ago. That was quite a while ago.
Other methods of chatting with fans are often a lot more direct and effective, try Twitter, Reddit, the Mixer Streams or the new Offical Halo Discord server as examples of where devs are often interacting with and chatting to fans in a method which is more efficient and doesnt make fans go insane with questions.
All and all, what I’m trying to say here is that the devs are often quite happy to chat about the game. But forums are old and have been left behind. Go join Discord for that kind of community interaction that is missed.

I feel the same way you do. Here’s the thing though, 343 does read are little interactions as a community. They even respond once in a blue moon if the topic is a big deal.

I don’t think forums are outdated, just look how many people are active on this forums.

After hearing how in tune Lionhead was with their community makes me even sadder Microsoft closed their doors. RIP Lionhead and Fable, hope all those employees found jobs.

Exactly my thoughts!I just now remembered one thing that makes all their friendly acts on the Forums have much more weight to it.There were so little people there posting in comparison to Halo Forums that sometimes there haven’t been a new post on the Forums for days.Bu they still cared so much about us few there and listened and made our wishes come true by rereleasing 5 or more years old dlc-s on the store despite how their Bosses felt about this.Thank you Lionhead once again!

Sucks that Microsoft closed Lionhead before Microsoft started caring about creating more first party games. They just acquired 5 new studios to make games, if they had focused on first party sooner I bet Lionhead would still be making games, and not forced games at that. I really want them to continue the Fable franchise with another studio but at the same time you know it won’t be the same, Lionhead and Fable were so unique I don’t think you can easily replicate that, let alone improve it. This is all off topic though. As far as 343i, they have been getting better at communicating and listening to the community over the last couple of years. It’s not where I’d like it to be, but it’s at least comforting to know that they’re getting there.

Neither here nor there but I no longer see anywhere to report bugs so I’ll leave this here in hopes it gets seen. When adjusting hdr in the MCC the default button does not actually ‘default’ the settings. It defaults the slider values but does not default any hdr settings you may have been playing around with. Just something I’m throwing out there. I’m sure it would be a simple fix but just wanted to possibly make someone aware on the development side.

There are a half dozen feedback threads for specific issues in MCC an MCC support section.

I don’t think forums are outdated either. Forums are my preferred way to communicate, because they don’t require both people to be there at the same time. I don’t want to wait to chat with someone when I can post a clear and concise description on a forum. My time is too valuable. I have better things to do than chat. Also, you mentioned Reddit, which is basically a forum.

If there’s an official forum for a game, the developers should be active on it.

I don’t know how realistic it is to expect the same level of communication from 343 when the Halo community dwarfs the Fable community, but I’ve definitely seen the devs post here before. If you want something more consistent try reddit or whatever the equivalent is to NeoGAF now. Frank O’connor’s probably the most community-active “triple A” dev I’m aware of, and gaming sites love to turn his post history into full-blown articles.
