So I hit the XP cap for the first time today, and I’m wondering what happens if I keep playing and get commendations? I’ll keep playing tonight either way… but I’m curious to know if I get that XP tomorrow when the clock rolls over, or if that’s just a bunch of XP gone forever

It doesn’t seem like a lot of thought was put into that aspect of the game.
So you never played Reach or CE Anniversary?
The hardest part about getting 20,000,000 CR for Inheritor was the 120,000 CR per day cap. The only exception was Halo Waypoint CR. You need to learn to work around it. If you are nearing completion of a Weekly or Monthly challenge and have been playing all day, then leave it for a day when you know you won’t have time to play much. I used that technique to get 120,000 a day. Some days I would play for 3-4 hours to reach (pun) the cap, others I would pop a couple of challenges and play for 1-2 hours to reach the cap.
No, I played oodles of Reach. I just didn’t chase after every commendation and stuck to SWAT. I could play for hours in a day and never reach the cap (I only ever hit it once in all my 40+ days of game play). The big difference in Reach was that you didn’t get a gazillion commendations in a day of game play. Why have them if the credits received from them are not going to count when you get them?
The bottom line (as I see it) is that with the much larger amount of commendations in this game, there ought to be some consideration to the fact that players won’t always want to play when they are going to get numerous commendations and miss out on thousands of experience that they otherwise would not have gotten.
This is not something that will deter me from playing a game I love, but the same simply cannot be said of many other H4 players. Some people just won’t play if they’ve hit the cap… much less if they are going to miss out on XP from commendations that they would have gotten before.
IMO a daily XP cap is pointless enough, and only deters people from playing more of a game that the developers themselves want to be played. Tacking on the fact that XP earned from commendations just disappears into cyberspace just seems like a bad idea from a developer’s standpoint.

Once you hit the cap you stop earning XP, no matter the source. And the cap resets daily at midnight HST.
