My love for Halo started late, with Halo 3: ODST, so I’m certainly biased in that regard. I’m still wondering, why is no one talking about colors? This gameplay looked so randomly colorful, I couldn’t believe it when I first saw it. I was literally shocked.
Halos world always seemed wartorn to me, even in the more colorful campaign of CE. Not necessarily in a realistic, but certainly in a believable and immersive way.
It’s settings felt decidedly mature to me, strangely but nicely contrasting the actually quite fantastical and simplifyingly stilised nature of all the things populating the world (perfect example: the grunts in ODST, where on legendary difficulty, these normally funny and even quite cute little baddies could turn into scary opponents in the dark of NM’s streets).
I think the colors played a big part in why I took every encouter in every mission as seriously as the character I was playing would in that moment. They sold me those moments, how ever funny, random or unbelievable they would have seemed on paper.
The colors of Infinite however, well, all they would do for me is constantly reminding me of the fact that this is just a video game.
You re not wrong, also thats one of the things people mention when they refer to the art direction. Thats what people meant by saying it was cartoony. The overall tone of the game felt like this to me, its one of the reasons i cant take Infinite seriously.

Why not? It looks exactly like Halo CEA & 2A. People took them pretty seriously.

CE anniversary was bad if you ask me, plenty of people disliked the artstyle including me, H2 anniversary was somewhat less cartoony, sometimes i switch n play to anniversary graphics, but i believe they couldve been better, especially HCEA. As for Infinite, i really like how chief and the elites look, but thats it, the rest just seem out of place, they mix a lot of artstyles and that throws the overall style off balance.
I think what we have seen is a small part of a large open world , I dont expect it to be so colourful everywhere .
Also with the day/night simulation I think you could have different experiences in the same area depending on the lighting, I also assume the music will change to a more eary tone once the sun sets .
I would love for the flood to arrive and consume the wildlife and change the landscape permanently in some places ect… infinite options .
@XSV
Cartoony, yeah I might have heard that here and there. I guess since the quality of the graphics is also lacking, people keep mixing it up when talking about the visuals in general, and the colors are overshadowed by more easily graspable issues like textures and lighting. A shame really, since art direction and graphics are two completely differnt things…
@EpicAngel00
That’s the thing with colors and emotions, it’s hard to put your finger on what triggers which feelings, and it’s also quite subjective. I think both anniversary games showed the direction in which 343 wanted to go with the colors (though they kinda contradicted those of their main line games in my opinion), but Infinite goes more than on step further I feel like. Colors are so flush on enemies and environments, explosions and effects are so opaque and saturated, and where ones were detailed, carefully designed and colored skyboxes, now there only is a blue and orange color gradient that looks like it’s drawn with the gradient tool in photoshop.
This is why Mega Construx has been mentioned, in reagrds to the demo, as the Banished would fit right in with the multi-colour army builder packs. Makes for accurate action figures, but I’m not sure that’s such a great thing, in this case…
Honestly, I was hoping the Banished soldiers would look as they did in the Halo Wars 2 cutscenes, and not how they looked during the Halo Wars 2 gameplay. Making the colour tones a little darker in Infinite should help with this, as the Banished are a burgundy colour anyway, not red.
