Colorblind Affinity

Colorblindness is something 1 in 7 men in the world are afflicted with, yet video game developers are woefully behind the times in accommodating these customers.

This issue affects me personally to one degree or another no matter what game im playing. In Halo it is most prevalent when i am on blue team playing against red on any sort of “earth” map. Earth here meaning green trees/grass/background. It is not completely debilitating, i can see the other players, but i cant deny I’m a hell of a worse shot when trying to hit anything red in that environment.

To that end I wanted to pose the idea to you, the always kind and tactful Halo 4 community to get your ideas/support.

My idea is to have 343 add a setting in game that allows you to always be Red team/blue team various forms of colorblindness may not benefit from always being red, and may benefit more from always being blue

I’ve thought about it and i cant think of a way this could be abused other than with party match making. In that case the option should not be available.

Is this a worthwhile idea or is this thread doomed to go down the path of “cry more you colorblind noob”?

This seems like a very reasonable solution, hope it happens for you buddy!

I’m red green colorblind, I support this option. Ive seen options to help with colorblindness in very very few games.

If you are not completely colour blind, you should try this:

However, I do think that your solution would imbalance the matchmaking system.

According to research conducted in 17 countries - including the USA, Germany and Russia - blue is the world’s favourite colour on average. The research, released in 2005, concluded that 47% of Germans, 41% of Americans and 37% of Russians all claimed that blue was their favourite colour.

It seems like a resonable solution if 343 could only give the option to people with colourblindness though, preferably through your xbox profile.

My wife’s brother, always tinkers with the brightness/contrast/color when he plays video games, especially MP FPS. Maybe should try that when you playing MP?
Says it helps him out

It is interesting that most video games do not have supportive options for individuals with color blindness. Maybe they will have some sort of support option when initially setting up the next generation console.

I had not heard of these glasses before, I truly thank you for posting that link. However, the $600 price tag is a bit steep for me at this point, but it is something to consider.

On your second point though: That study would be more applicable if those same people were asked to choose ONLY between red and blue as opposed to all the other colors that they could have chosen. It might be possible that people would take the time to pick a color based on their personal preference, but I’m doubting it would cause THAT much of an imbalance. Even if it did, 343 could simply make others with that setting selected wait if a team doesn’t have enough people of the opposite color. I would gladly wait longer for a game I can see clearly.

But again thank you for the link

Wouldn’t it be best to just have an option to change the colours of the Spartans. Similar to how CoD changes the colour of the lil arrows on the minimap showing team mate locations.

Black Ops 1 and 2 have settings for players with colour blindness.

Possibly a better solution would be just to change it to where if you have colorblind accommodations activated, you would always perceive the enemy as the blue team. It would just always orient the game so that, regardless of what team you were actually on, you would see your team as red and the enemy as blue. I remember America’s Army functioned sort of like this; both teams perceived their own side as Soldiers and the enemy team as terrorists.

The only downside I see to this is that it could make things weird in Theater mode…

If you could set it so enemy’s are always red/blue then I don’t see any harm in it. Even in FFA you could somehow come across custom Spartans all red if your lucky. Hell I’d use that feature simply for the consistency of being the same team. The only downside is talking to other friends but ohwell

That is actually a much simpler idea, don’t change the matchmaking, change the perspective of the player.

A set of color settings would certainly fix this issue. It is a shame that the colorblind are being ignored these days in terms of gaming.

  1. It is not “ignorant” to not have accommodations to every minority group. Just throwing that out there.

  2. Player color should have nothing to do with how well you acquire targets. In fact, I often forget what team I’m on in almost every match. What should set you off that you’re looking at an enemy is the red gamertag above their head, red reticle, and aim magnetism. I understand that most colorblind people can tell the difference between red and blue, correct?

BF on the original xbox made it so red/blue changes to orange/cyan as a colorblind option.

I believe they should. It can only help and get some more credibility with the player base at this point.

Thank you for your post

  1. I never said anyone was ignorant and I apologize if you took it that way

  2. You missed my point, again I apologize if it was not clear.

If I am blue team fighting red team on a green map, I cannot SEE the red apart from the green very well. Others who have different colorblind types than mine (red/green colorblind), may have the same issue with blue players on blue backgrounds (ice type maps) when they are on the red team.

I hate the new maps because the bloom affects the colour blindness an I have betrayed teammates because I cannot tell they are not the enemy.

Basically my skill has dropped say from 35/50 to 5/50. It has affected me that much. I try but just cannot aim for anything.

I’m the same on Meltdown.

Oh well. Another wasted game because no colour blind option is added. COD and Battlefield have settings for colour blind… Why not Halo?

  1. That’s why I was “just throwing that out there”.

  2. You misunderstood MY point. I was saying that player color should have nothing to do with your ability to sense them. If you made a match of team slayer where everyone was silver on Haven, it would still be the same to most people because they don’t rely on character visibility, they rely on sensing movement, aim magnetism, and visual cues like popping gamertags and changing reticles.

I’m sorry, I zoned out on the first sentence, just thinking. . .
sigh, Bungie would have loved that statistic. . . .
