I’d appreciate hearing the impressions of color blind players that have had hands-on with H4 or those who’ve watched a lot of the game videos. Do you notice any changes or improvements over previous Halos?
I recall someone from 343 saying they’re sensitive to the issue and were being careful about color pallet and other design choices.
I’m not color blind but play with some people who are and would like to understand what sort of experience they may have with the new game.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Just to let some people know there’s a difference between color blindness and color deficient. Color blindness means seeing black and white or grey and color deficient means not being able so see one or more colors because you are missing one or two cones.
But to answer your topic. I have a mild case of color deficiency and cannot see all of the numbers or shapes on the Ishihara test. I can still tell colors apart because that’s the way I’ve seen them all my life, I’m 22.
I’m using color blindness in the general sense rather than the inability to see color. My friends have difficulty distinguishing shades and pairings of various colors.

I have a difficulty with this, and it means even though I love Snipers (and play that gametype in most other games I play), I can’t play it so well in Halo since I can’t pick up on the far away enemies too well.
It saddens me that there’s never an option for it, but then I don’t know how it would work in multi-team.

Have you played H4 and/or taken a critical look at the videos? Do you have the same issue with it?

Unfortunately I haven’t. From the video’s, it looks to be the same though. If I concentrate on the reticle, I find it difficult to pick up on some enemies. I actually find I have a harder time picking up on red team this time, whereas before it was blue that had me at a disadvantage.
To be perfectly honest, it isn’t too big a deal for me. I’ve been playing Halo since Halo 1, so I’ve learned to deal with it, but it would be nice to have a colour blind option in the menu for once.
I’m just happy there’s no more Forge World maps for matchmaking, at least to begin with. The amount of times I’ve lost my reticle in the gray building blocks or lost it in the abundance of blue sky seems to border a bazillion times. Sniping on most Forge World maps means I have to guess where my reticle is and go from there, yes I know it’s in the center of the screen but you try and snipe without an outlined reticle. The H4 maps seems to have enough of a varied color design that this shouldn’t be a problem. I was definitely disappointed when they said they were taking note of people with color blindness but didn’t give the option to change the color of the reticle. Give me that option and I will be so damn happy.
I had asked this before (because I am color blind) and people told me that 343i are working with color blindness in mind. I’ve seen videos and there doesn’t seem to be too many problems, but I haven’t actually played the game yet.

Good point about Forge World grey. Sounds like that change may be enough for some people (I won’t miss it either).
Like you, I’d prefer to see players given more control over their displays.

It’s interesting how it affects different people. For instance, one of my friends has difficulty making a snap call between red and blue so, reluctantly, avoids team games in matchmaking.
Any other color blind players who’ve had face time with H4 or watched the videos? Do you notice any improvements or differences? Thanks!
