They are but that might be just a convenient wording for the games/lore.
Worms don’t have gender. At least I don’t think so. Though I tend to view them as males mostly because of their violence and heftiness.

Why not just continue to call them hunters and sweep the gender issue under the rug?
Probably “they”. Because if the worms are considered the individual, then there are many, many worms inside the entity known as colony, and if the mgalekgolo is the individual, then colony is a bonded pair and therefore there are two of them.
I assume they. If the worms are anything like our own worms here on earth, then they are hermaphrodites. So they have the organs of a male and female. But since they refer to themselves as “they” that is their preferred pronoun
